MetaMedia today announced the promotion of Frank Bryant to chief operating officer. Reporting directly to MetaMedia CE Jason Brenek, Bryant will help focus the organization on the execution of operational and strategic plans and oversee functions related to the acquisition and delivery of content from studios and other suppliers, deployment and logistics, project management, marketing, legal and corporate strategy.
A new report from the analyst firm Gower Street shows that nearly a quarter (23 percent) of all U.S. movie theatres have stayed closed since March 2020. These locations generated a combined yearly box office of $1.8 billion on average in 2018 and 2019. The report makes clear that the situation will remain difficult until quality movies are available on a regular and consistent basis.
Based on preliminary data the European Audiovisual Observatory estimates that cinema attendance in the European Union and the United Kingdom plummeted to 294.7 million admissions in 2020. This is 712.3 million ticket sales fewer than in 2019, representing a decline of 70.7 percent. A similar decrease (69.8 percent) was registered in the European Union only (EU27), where admissions dropped from 831.0 million to 250.7 million, for a total loss of 580.3 million tickets.

The Hollywood Professional Association has announced details for its Tech Retreat Supersession, a two-day interactive exploration of the workflows and technology of multiple productions taking place around the globe. The Supersession is set for March 23-24 and follows on the success of last year’s Supersession which focused on the live production and post-production of the short film, The Lost Lederhosen.
