SMPTE Hollywood to Discuss the State of Drone Technology

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will offer a revealing glimpse into the state of drone technology and artistry at its October virtual meeting. A panel of experts in the use of drones in film and television production will discuss the latest advances and future innovations in airborne camera systems. Free and open to all, the virtual event will take place on October 7 at 6:00 p.m. PDT on Zoom.

Aerigon Used on Key Spectre Scene

Jeremy Braben says the shot could only have been done with Aerigon.Intuitive Aerial’s Aerigon UAV was used on a key action scene in Spectre, the latest addition to the James Bond movie franchise. Helicopter Film Services flew its Aerigon just above the rooftops near Trafalgar Square in London as Bond, played by Daniel Craig, races up a fire escape.

The Aerigon carried a 6K Red Dragon and Zeiss Master Prime lens.

Filmmaker Ty Evans used Aerigon to capture spectacular shots for the skateboarding feature film We Are Blood. Directed by Evans and produced by Brain Farm and Mountain Dew Green Label Films, We Are Blood profiles professional skateboarder Paul Rodriquez and his wide circle of skateboarding comrades. Filmed on locations around the globe, the movie relied on dynamic action shots, captured at different angles and perspectives that bring the audience into the skateboarding experience.

For most the experience of flight comes in their dreams, but in this declared Year of the Drone more are living the dream, albeit, vicariously, thru their unmanned aerial vehicle. There are a multitude of drones out there, everything from ones that sit in the palm of your hand to eight-armed-octopus-like drones that can lift heavy camera systems like the Red. Honestly, I would have to be pretty sure of something that is carrying a Red with its $19,000 price tag for the body alone. But I’m going to talk about the drone that has started a real evolution in UAVs, the 3DR Iris+.

The Drone Wars: Reviewing DJI and 3DR

You may not realize it but there is a war in our skies. There are no bullets flying, rather it’s a war of images or, at least, the ability to record photos and videos from far above our heads. The main combatants are DJI and 3DR (formerly known as 3D Robotics). DJI has the Phantom; its white visage is almost synonymous with the word drone. Now they have added what many consider the consummate cool with the Inspire 1.3DR has quickly evolved into a major player with first the Iris+ and very soon the highly anticipated Solo. But what are the real differences? After all, they both fly. They both take still pictures or videos. What really sets them apart and which one do you want? Here are the facts. Here, also, is where personal choice comes into play.
