Genre-Bending Film Finishes at Umedia

Post-production finishing for Prospect, the acclaimed feature debut from directors Zeek Earl and Christopher Caldwell, was completed at Umedia in Vancouver. The film, which is co-produced by Depth of Field, The Realm and Ground Control and had its world premiere this month at SXSW, has drawn rave reviews for its genre-bending tale of a teenage girl and her father who travel to a remote, toxic planet in search of riches.

Blending Two Visual Looks into One

VFX Legion recently created the visual effects for the highly anticipated crossover episodes of Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. Legion has handled all of the visual effects for both shows for almost three-years. However, the crossover episodes required visual effects that blended with two series that use different tools and each have their own look, presenting a more complex set of challenges.

Ymagis Group Reports Growth for 2017, Plans VR Offering in 2018

Ymagis Group today reported its full-year earnings for the 2017 fiscal year December 31. In 2017, saying the group demonstrated its ability to offset the decline in its virtual print fee activities (revenue -11.5 percent at €61.5 million) by the growth of its service activities (+9.0 percent at €118.1 million). The group’s business thus rose slightly by +0.8 percent to €179.2 million. Driven by the full-year integration of acquisitions made in 2016 and by the implementation of the growth strategy based on its services activities, the Eclair and CinemaNext business units saw their revenue increase respectively by +15.4 percent and +3.4 percent at €54.8 million and €63.3 million.

Light Iron Expands to Atlanta

Post-production creative services provider Light Iron, a member of the Panavision family of companies, has opened a new facility in Atlanta to locally support the robust Georgia production community. The expansion is the fourth since Panavision acquired Light Iron in 2015, bringing Light Iron’s U.S. locations to six total, including Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, Albuquerque and Chicago.

Felix Fissel Joins VFXnow as VP of Global Operations

GPL Technologies has hired Felix Fissel to lead its VFXnow unit as vice president of global operations. Fissel, an IT specialist with deep experience in the visual effects industry, will oversee VFXnow operations in Los Angeles, New York, and Vancouver. He will also lead business development and seek to expand markets for the unit, a hardware-as-a-service provider to visual effects studios, game developers, editing houses and other creative services companies.

SMPTE Issues Call for Papers for SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has issued a call for technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, which will be held October 23-25 at a new venue, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Authors must submit their proposals by May 28.

Reliance Industries Takes Equity Stake in Eros International

Reliance Industries Limited, through a subsidiary, has agreed to subscribe to a five percent equity stake in Eros International Media Limited at a price of fifteen dollars per share, which represents an 18 percent premium over the stock’s last closing price. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory and other approvals. Furthermore, RIL and Eros announced that they have agreed to partner in India to jointly produce and consolidate content from across India.
