Oceans 3D – Into the Deep

The Mantello Brothers Talk about the Making of their Latest Movie

Disneynature has acquired the North American and Mexican distribution rights to the underwater film OceanWorld 3D, the first feature-length nature documentary ever filmed and released in 3D, it was announced by Jean-Francois Camilleri, executive vice president and general manager for Disneynature, and Francois Mantello, chairman of 3D Entertainment. The film is presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the legendary Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and was directed and produced respectively by veteran filmmakers Jean-Jacques and Francois Mantello. OceanWorld 3D premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Annual Film Market last month, and will be released theatrically in France and Russia starting this August. The film's North America debut will be announced at a later date. Digital Cinema Report recently spoke with the Mantello Brothers about the production.

Palace Cinemas, XDC Reach Agreement to Deploy Digital Cinema in Central Europe

Palace Cinemas, the leading exhibitor in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, and XDC, the leading Pan-European digital cinema service company, have agreed on the deployment of digital cinema systems in 170 of Palace Cinemas' screens in Central Europe. The agreement between Palace Cinemas and XDC includes the roll out of DCI-compliant projection systems co-financed by the Virtual Print Fee model. Rollout is scheduled to begin in the second half of the year.

SmartJog Signs Agreement with Europalaces

SmartJog has announced that French theatre chain, Europalaces, the owner of Gaumont and Pathe cinemas, has signed an agreement for the purchase and deployment of its high capacity SmartJog Digital Cinema Central Library Servers.

3ality Digital Receives Global Media Visionary Award 

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Sports Video Group have presented the Global Media Visionary Award to 3ality Digital for its live 3D production of the 2009 FedEx BCS Championship Game, which took place last January in Miami, Florida.   3ality Digital was presented with the honor alongside Sony, Fox Sports and Cinedigm Digital Cinema, all of whom were partners on the project. The groundbreaking event marked the first time a live 3D broadcast was made available to consumers nationwide, with thousands of college football fans filling scores of movie theatres coast to coast to see the University of Florida Gators take on the University of Oklahoma Sooners. 

Michael Goi Named ASC President

Michael Goi has been named president of the American Society of Cinematographers.  "The members of ASC are committed to the ideals of the great cinematographers who created images for the classic movies we love," Goi says. "I remember being enormously touched when I saw The Graduate when I was eight years old. I didn't recognize it then, but years later I appreciated how the artful use of light, shadows and composition by Robert Surtees served the story. When I became a member of ASC, I was surprised by how open and friendly everyone was. My heroes became my friends who openly shared their knowledge and feelings about filmmaking. There is an unbreakable camaraderie which I treasure."
