2009: The Year of 3D

The coming year promises, in many ways, to be a make or break year for digital 3D in movies. Current plans call for Hollywood to release 25 or more 3D titles in 2009. That amounts to a 3D release every other week, although the studios being the studios it might be more appropriate to preview this as the Summer of Too Many 3D Movies All at Once. That discussion is for another day. Can all of these movies possibly succeed? Will 3D prove to be a fad, yet again? In my mind, before we can answer those two questions there are a long list of other questions that must be answered first. Here are ten questions we will explore in depth in our yearlong series of Special Reports – 2009: The Year of 3D.

AccessIT, Barco, Christie Enter Phase 2 Supply Agreement

Building on the success of the Phase 1 Christie/AIX Digital Cinema deployment plan, AccessIT has entered into supply agreements with Barco and Christie Digital Systems to bring digital cinema systems to theatres in the United States and Canada.   Christie will provide up to 5,000 projectors for the previously announced AccessIT Phase 2 Digital Cinema Deployment Plan. The planned number of Barco projectors was not announced.

James Cameron and Vince Pace to Speak at 3D Entertainment Summit

Award winning director and producer James Cameron will deliver a special keynote address at the 3D Entertainment Summit, which will take place at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, December 1-2. Joining Cameron in discussion will be Vince Pace who, together with Cameron, developed the revolutionary Fusion Camera System allowing for the re-emergence of 3D filmmaking and the advancement of entertainment.

Fly Me to the Moon 3D a Hit for Xpand in Europe

Xpand has reported that the animated 3D release Fly Me to the Moon from nWave Pictures has achieved unprecedented success on Xpand’s screens throughout Europe, capturing an audience of approximately 73,000 during the film’s first five days of release.

Next Generation Cinema – The Hybrid Theatre

A video of the presentation Next Generation Cinema – The Hybrid Theatre by Ron Gillen of The Walt Disney Company is now available on the website of the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications association.  It is the latest presentation from their conference earlier this year to be added to their online video collection. Gillen’s remarks covered a broad range of topics relating to theatre design and in particular the specialist requirements of a 3D theatre.

IDC, OpenSky Announce Deal for Digital Cinema Satellite Delivery in Europe

International Datacasting Corporation has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding, with OpenSky, based in Italy, for the provision of IDC's broadband satellite technology for the rollout of a new digital cinema distribution network in Europe. The MOU has been consummated with an initial order of uplink broadcast equipment and an initial deployment of IDC's satellite receivers to multiple theatres across Italy. Financial details of the MOU were not disclosed for competitive reasons.
