MI Post Upgrades Digital Intermediate Suite

MI Post, New York has upgraded its digital intermediate suite with the purchase of a DVS-SAN storage system.

With the introduction of the DVS-SAN, MI Post can manage and share content in a central location offering clients a flexible digital intermediate workflow with real-time 2K and HD processing. The DVS-SAN is a central storage system specifically designed for uncompressed video and digital film finishing where multiple workstations can access large amounts of data quickly and simultaneously in real time.

Film material is scanned directly to the DVS-SAN from MI Post's telecines at 2K or HD resolutions. Colorists access full resolution material immediately from the DVS-SAN and grade on da Vinci's Resolve digital mastering suite even before the scanning process is complete. da Vinci Systems has qualified the DVS-SAN as a central storage platform for Resolve. Multiple streams of 2K data are read from, or written to, the DVS-SAN in real time, delivering a faster and more efficient finishing experience for MI Post's clients.

"We are excited to be the first facility in New York to integrate the DVS-SAN into our DI workflow," says MI Post colorist Eric Alvarado. "We have found the DVS-SAN easy to use and have worked on both long and short format projects with zero downtime."

MI Post was acquired last year and has become an affiliate of Greystone & Co., Inc., giving it the wherewithal to respond to market demands by adding creative talent and new services and technologies including DI workflow. As they planned the upgrade to DI, MI Post's team of colorists – Eric Alvarado, Micah Kirz, Eli Friedman, Dino Regas and Milan Boncich – looked to the DVS-SAN to further enhance their color grading requirements.

MI Post's effects artists and editors also gain immediate access to the same data. This collaborative creative workflow environment is made possible by the DVS-SAN's ability to allow multiple workstations to connect and access the data at the same time. The DVS-SAN's open file system supports workstation connectivity from any operating system – Linux, Windows, IRIX or Mac OS – and comes with Spycer, a unique content management toolset that keeps the system fully optimized and running trouble free.

"MI Post caters to a diverse short and long format client base, and with that comes a demand for flexibility and efficiency," says Tony Fox, DVS sales and market development manager. "At DVS we continually strive to deliver powerful tools like the DVS-SAN so our customers can meet their clients' expectations and better service clients without compromising quality or creativity."
