Digital Cinema solutions provider Access Integrated Technologies has announced that film distributor Overture Films will provide all of their movies to digital cinema equipped theatres in AccessIT's Phase 1 digital cinema plan and will pay virtual print fees (VPFs) under a 10 year agreement similar to those signed by all the other major studios. This agreement expands upon the strong relationship the companies have built since Overture's inception last year, as Overture is already a customer of both AccessIT's distribution software and satellite delivery services.

Ballantyne Sees Third Quarter Film-Based Revenue Decline, Digital Revenue Increase

Ballantyne of Omaha has reported financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30th. Net third quarter revenues were $12.3 million, a 2.4 percent decrease from net revenues of $12.6 million in Q3 2007, principally reflecting an expected decline in film-based products. This decline in sales was offset by digital cinema equipment sales which rose to $1.6 million in the period versus $1.1 million in Q3 2007, as well as the contribution from the Company's screen business, Strong Screen Systems, acquired in mid-October 2007, which contributed sales of $1.5 million in Q3 2008.

Premiere Cinemas Newest All-Digital Cinema has no Mezzanine

Texas-based Premiere Cinema recently bought a cinema structure that is, thanks to digital technology, the first cineplex without a mezzanine, while four of the fourteen theatres are 3D capable. Premiere Cinema president and CEO Gary Moore says, “As far as I know, this is the first theatre that does not have a mezzanine and, since we’re all digital and there’s not a film projector in sight, we don’t need one.”

Cinedigm Digital Cinema, formerly AccessIT has signed its Phase 2 Entity on an $8.9 million credit facility. The facility will fund the launch of Cinedigm's first 137 Phase 2 conversions of Premiere Cinemas' theatres to the Company's digital cinema platform, in what is expected to ultimately be a 10,000-screen digital cinema deployment plan. The first 35 systems are expected to be operational in December, bringing the total for Phase 2 to 55 by the end of the year.

D&E Entertainment Presents Live at Budokan: 30th Anniversary Concert Film

GDC Signs VPF Deal with Three Studios for Exhibitors in Asia

In a move designed to accelerate the conversion of cinemas in Asia to digital technology, GDC has reached separate non-exclusive agreements with three Hollywood Studios for digital cinema deployment across Asia. Under these agreements, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures International, and Universal Pictures International, will be committed to supply Asian exhibitors with feature film content digitally, as well as to make financial contributions towards the hardware cost of DCI-compliant digital cinema equipment deployed by GDC. Phase 1 of the program covers 6000 screens in various countries throughout Asia.

Ballantyne of Omaha has announced that it has reduced its overall staffing by 19 people, or approximately 10 percent, as part of the ongoing shift in its business from the manufacture of film projection equipment to the distribution of digital cinema projectors. Annualized cost savings related to these actions is estimated to amount to approximately $900,000. Ballantyne will record a first quarter severance charge of approximately $255,000 related to these actions.

GDC Signs Contract with China’s Dadi Digital Cinema

GDC Technology has signed a major contract in China. Under the new agreement, Dadi Digital Cinema Development Limited will deploy 100 units of GDC’s SA-2100 digital cinema server in China by the middle of 2009. The boom in 3D movie releases in 2009 is news to no one, but what many don’t realize is that over the same time period, a greater number of live 3D broadcast events were shown in theatres than new 3D movie releases. More than a dozen high-profile sports and entertainment events were broadcast live in 3D at digital cinemas across the United States, Mexico, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The Orange/France Telecom broadcast of the men’s final at the French Open tennis tournament, GlobeCast’s broadcast of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” from the Rennes Opera House in France, the Arqiva broadcast of 6 Nations rugby matches in England, the NBA All-Star Saturday night, and the Bowl Championship Series (BCS Bowl) game are only some of the high-value events shown live in 3D — all having been distributed to theatres in the Sensio 3D format.

NEC Adopts Xilinx FPGAs for 3D-Capable Cinema Projectors

To help reduce overall cost, NEC Display Solutions has adopted the Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA family for three models of its DLP Cinema projectors including the NC3200S for screen sizes up to 32 meters in width, the NC2000C (20 meters) and NC1200C (12 meters), with capability for the recent fast-growing 3D content. The three models are capable of projecting all existing 3D video content. The company has started shipments in stages.

Arts Alliance Media has announced two significant milestones. First, the company has signed a deal with Cineworld, the second largest cinema chain in Europe to convert its 790-screen circuit to digital over the next three years. Cineworld will finance the deal from its existing financial resources and cash flow. Barco has announced an exclusive agreement with Cinemark in which Barco is providing turnkey installation and support services for thousands of digital cinema projectors. This agreement builds upon last year's announcement that Cinemark USA had selected Barco as their exclusive DLP digital cinema provider.   Barco is currently installing its family of digital projectors in combination with Doremi media servers. The service agreement covers the initial installation, including projectors, pedestals, audio system upgrades, servers, and automation.
