Enhancing the Experience

ShowEast 2011 concluded last week in its new venue, the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Miami and by most accounts the event was at least a measured success. The setting, right on the Atlantic Ocean, was certainly a hit, not that people had that much time to spend outside. The digital cinema transition has reached a critical milestone with roughly 60,000 screens either converted to or about to be converted to digital. That number represents half (some would say more than half) of all the screens in the world. Given that fact, one of the things I found surprising during conversations in Miami was that the unconverted screens seemed to get less attention at this show than did the already converted. By far the two focal points of this conference were alternative content and, to an event greater extent, new products designed for the theatres that are already digital. In both cases, the excitement at this show was all about enhancing the exhibition experience.

CineEurope 2011: Embracing Alternative Content

This year’s rebranded CineEurope was a robust affair, and the mood ebullient, with speakers from exhibition, distribution and the industry press brimming with confidence about the future of digital cinema and the opportunities it has both created, and continues to create.  Quite a marked difference from a year ago, where, mired in the recession – or at least more mired than we are now – the mood was a little more sombre, a little less assured.  Avatar had wowed everyone but there were still so many questions needing answers, from the technical to the financial, and confidence was nowhere near as high. What a difference a year makes.

Leading the Way in Norway

The first CineEurope (formerly known as Cinema Expo), the official convention of the Union Internationale des Cinemas, was held this past week in Amsterdam. Our European Correspondent Melissa Keeping was at the show and will offer her firsthand perspectives in the next Report. Meanwhile, here are some early announcements. It was fitting that Amsterdam was the host city because Norway has taken a leading roll and will soon be the first country to be completely digital.

Stereoscopic 3D is Topic One at NAB 2011

For at least the third year in a row stereoscopic 3D was the number one topic of discussion at the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. Is there anyone left who seriously believes that 3D is just a passing fad?

Getting Down to Business: CinemaCon 2011

Timing is everything in life. The last several years of the exhibition event ShoWest will always be remembered to a certain degree with the phrase “just around the corner,” a reference to the frustrations of getting the digital cinema transition in full gear. In contrast, the inaugural CinemaCon is likely to be remembered with phrases such as “gold rush” as an astonishing number of business deals were announced during the show’s four days.
