What’s Next for MoviePass?

In June 2011, when co-founders Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt launched MoviePass, they surely had no idea what the next decade would have in store for them. The new company initially faced hostility from many of the biggest exhibitors, notably AMC. That never changed but MoviePass made progress and by 2016 Mitch Lowe, a former Netflix executive, was named CEO. Throughout that period, MoviePass experimented with different pricing models and slowly, but steadily, grew. In 2017 the analytics firm Helios and Matheson's acquired a majority stake in the company, Spikes was fired, and Helios and Matheson CEO Ted Farnsworth began to exert more control.

I’m a survivor of the great MoviePass era and I’m here to tell you my story. It's been nearly a year since I gave up my ten dollars a month subscription to the "unlimited" MoviePass program. To this day the choices I made and the blind faith I had in the system surprise me. I like to think it all started innocently enough, the concept of free unlimited movies at any theatre. No limits? No loopholes? No extra fees? It was intoxicating, to say the least, and I fell for it all hook, line, and sinker. And for a while there, it was a truly beautiful affair.

Flix Brewhouse Partners with MoviePass

MoviePass today announced a partnership with Flix Brewhouse, which calls itself the nation’s only cinema circuit that pairs full service in-theatre dining with an award-winning craft brewery at every location. Started in 2011, Flix Brewhouse is based in Round Rock, Texas and operates locations there as well as in Iowa, Indiana, New Mexico. Its newest theatre, in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, is expected to open in April.

MoviePass, Vista Collaborate on Ticketing

MoviePass and Vista Group International are collaborating to allow theatre owners and chains nationwide that use VES ticketing to take advantage of full API integration with MoviePass’ growing subscription service. By integrating MoviePass directly into the VES ticketing software, participating theaters will be able to offer MoviePass members enhanced features and new capabilities on mobile devices.
