Dolby Atmos: Past, Present and Future

As is widely known, Dolby Atmos immersive sound technology debuted in June 2012 with the release of Disney-Pixar’s hit film Brave. Two years later Dolby introduced its premium large format theatre concept Dolby Cinema, which incorporates Dolby Atmos sound with Dolby Vision high dynamic range images, luxury seating and other custom design features. This month, another Disney-Pixar movie, Toy Story 4, opened in Dolby Cinemas across the globe, one of several high profile films set for release this year. I recently spoke with Dolby’s Michael Archer, vice president, worldwide cinema sales, and Jed Harmsen, vice president, cinema and content solutions about the Dolby Atmos experience and where the technology goes from here.

Kinopolis Opens Germany’s First Dolby Cinema

Kinopolis Gruppe today announced that it has opened Germany’s first Dolby Cinema at the renowned Mathäser Palast in Munich. In addition, the Dolby Cinema at Mathäser will have its own entrance as well as a lounge area for film fans to enjoy the refreshments and beverages that will be on offer in a VIP style lounge.

CinemaNext Completes Pathé Spreitenbach Multiplex

CinemaNext has completed the installation of Pathé Switzerland’s brand-new Pathé Spreitenbach multiplex, located near Zurich. Open to the public since May 9, the 10-screen cinema complex (1,322 seats) has been equipped by CinemaNext Switzerland with 4K laser phosphor projection, Dolby Surround 7.1 and three Dolby Atmos-enabled screens.

Sony Completes Spider-Verse Sound

Sound production for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animations’ feature film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has received critical acclaim including a Golden Globe nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Animated Feature and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association win for Best Animation, was completed on the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City.

Venom Sound Mix Completed at Sony

Box office hit, Venom, from Columbia Pictures, was among the first films to have its sound work completed through Sony Pictures Post Production Services’ expanded facilities on the studio lot in Culver City. Supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer/sound designer Will Files and his crew used a new theater-style sound design suite to create sound effects for the film, which stars Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as both the alien symbiote Venom and its human host, Eddie Brock

Odeon Opens the UK’s First Dolby Cinema

One of Europe’s most famous cinemas, London’s Odeon Leicester Square, will reopen this Christmas following an 11 month, multi million pound deluxe refurbishment that has transformed what has been called the home of the premiere back into a global icon in the heart of London’s West End. The building’s largest screen has been fully upgraded to combine luxurious reclining Odeon Luxe seats with the captivating experience of Dolby Cinema.

The Unnerving Suspense of Sound

Jonathan Wales, mixing at Formosa NoHo, recently completed the audio mix for the Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House. The Haunting of Hill House was mixed in Dolby Atmos. For the show, Wales needed to convey the feeling of spaciousness in the house and create unnerving suspense throughout the mix as a family relives their scary past.
