As exhibitors bask, at least temporarily, in the financial glow of The Dark Knight, there is now reason to be cautiously optimistic about the box office outlook for 2009. It was widely announced in recent days that Twentieth Century Fox has reached an agreement with the Digital Cinema Implementation Partners.

No Rest for the Weary

Laid to Rest Director Shot Digitally to Facilitate a Tapeless Workflow
It is a dark and claustrophobic night for the heroine of the upcoming horror movie, Laid to Rest, the terrifying story of a young girl who wakes up in a casket with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity. This is the second directorial effort from renowned special effects artist Robert Hall (Superbad, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the upcoming Pineapple Express). Anchor Bay Entertainment, a division of Starz Media, has picked up the film for release in February 2009, and premiered the Laid to Rest trailer at Comic Con in San Diego.

IMAX and Hoyts Cinemas to Install Theatres in Australia
IMAX Corporation and Australian exhibitor Hoyts Cinemas have announced a joint venture agreement to put four IMAX theatres in the cities of Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. The deal marks IMAX’s first international joint venture featuring the company's new IMAX digital system and doubles IMAX's footprint in Australia. To date, IMAX has signed contracts for more than 180 IMAX digital theatre systems, with approximately 50 scheduled to be installed by the end of 2008.

XDC Adds Sony, Universal Digital Cinema Deployment List

XDC has signed non-exclusive agreements with Sony Pictures and Universal and is now the first deploying entity to sign with six major U.S. distributors for the deployment of up to 8,000 DCI-compliant digital cinema installations across Europe. Sony Pictures Releasing International and Universal City Studios will support XDC, acting as a deploying entity, to roll out DCI-compliant digital cinema systems for theatrical presentations in several countries in Europe.
