Cinionic, the Barco, CGS, and ALPD cinema joint venture, announced today that the award-winning Barco Series 4 laser projection platform has had commitments from global exhibitors for more than 8,000 units since its launch one year ago. According to the company, Cinionic leads in laser solutions with more than 20,000 units worldwide.

Women in Exhibition to Host Reception at Inaugural CinemaCon

On the heels of a successful kick-off event in Los Angeles, the trade group Women in Exhibition is set to make its CinemaCon 2020 debut. Officially introduced at 2019’s Geneva Convention, Women in Exhibition serves as a networking hub for women within the film exhibition industry. Since its launch, the non-profit foundation has welcomed more than 100 new members. At WIE events in Los Angeles in January and at last year’s ShowEast, women gathered to chat, network, and have a little fun.

They’re Not Playing NICE in Canada

The Network of Independent Canadian Exhibitors has submitted evidence to the nation’s Competition Bureau regarding their access to films in Canada. Across the country, independent cinemas are coming together to decry prohibitive practices, which the association sees as unfairly blocking audiences from the choice of where to see a movie. They single out Cineplex for the blame.

Disney-Pixar’s Onward First Movie Available on TheaterEars Audio Description Track

TheaterEars and the Walt Disney Studios have announced that Disney and Pixar’s Onward is the first movie ever to have Audio Description available on the TheaterEars app, enabling moviegoers with visual impairments the ability to enjoy the film. “We are proud to work with Disney to break new ground with this [new] offering in our app,” said TheaterEars CEO Dam Mangru. “Onward is a fantastic film for moviegoers of all ages, and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy it.”

CinemaCon 2020: Precautions Being Taken

Late last month, John Fithian, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners and Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of the trade show CinemaCon issued a joint memo to the industry acknowledging that while the Coronavirus or COVID-19 is a serious concern, CinemaCon 2020 is still set to convene March 30 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. This week the two men issued another memo detailing the many precautions that are being taken to ensure the safety of everyone who attends the convention.

Kino Arena Installing Atom Seating at its Sofia, Bulgaria Movie Theatre

Kino Arena is installing recliners from Atom Seating at its movie theatre in the Sofia Mall in Sofia, Bulgaria. A total of 750 Atom Seating Helium recliners, a Spaces and Between brand, will be installed. Kino Arena owner Stefan Minchev said he chose Helium recliners as a step towards enhancing the overall movie experience of the cinemagoers.

Compression, File Sizes Topics at Next SMPTE Hollywood Section Meeting

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will explore the evolution of video compression, and new ideas for keeping files small, while preserving quality and creative intent, at its monthly meeting, scheduled for March 26 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
