Cinedigm has acquired all North American distribution rights to The Falling, starring Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, Doctor Who), an evocative and beguiling film centered on an epidemic of fainting (mass psychogenic illness) at an English girls’ school in the 60s directed and written by Carol Morley (Dreams of a Life).
The Falling will have a national theatrical, VOD and digital download release beginning late Summer 2015.
It's 1969 at a strict English girls' school where charismatic Abbie and intense and troubled Lydia are best friends. After a tragedy occurs at the school, a mysterious fainting epidemic breaks out threatening the stability of all involved.
In addition to Maisie Williams, the rising teenage star and winner of the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival's Shooting Stars Award, The Falling features an all-star supporting cast of English actors including Florence Pugh (Studio City, the upcoming one-hour Fox drama), Maxine Peake (The Theory of Everything), Monica Dolan (Wolf Hall), Joe Cole (Skins, Peaky Blinders) and Greta Scacchi (The Player).
The "superb musical soundtrack" (The Guardian) by Tracey Thorn is a wonderfully atmospheric and gently psychedelic complement to Morley's spooky film.
“The Falling is a mesmerizing psychological drama that delivers a tremendous emotional punch,” says Yolanda Macias, Cinedigm’s executive vice president of Acquisitions. “The reviews have been wonderful; Carol has made an intriguing and unsettling film which has cult status written all over it."
Abigail Walsh from Independent Film Sales negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers, with Kristin Harris representing Cinedigm. Independent will take The Falling to the Cannes Marché du Film to close deals in remaining territories.
The Falling is produced by Cairo Cannon of Cannon and Morley Productions (Dreams of a Life) and Luc Roeg of Independent (We Need To Talk About Kevin, Spider). The Falling is presented by BBC Films and BFI in association with Lipsync Productions, a Cannon and Morley/ Independent production in association with Boudica Red, a Carol Morley film. The film was developed with the BFI Film Fund.
