Faroudja F1 SystemFaroudja Enterprises today announced that the company has been granted three more patents. The patents improve F1’s video streaming and file compression efficiency without reducing perceived quality. The F1 solution utilizes any conventional encoder (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, HEVC, etc.) on the market, without any codec modifications.

The F1 platform is designed to better manage today’s increasing demand for video and pave the way for 4K delivery, especially through bandwidth limited networks, as well as traditionally delivered media. F1 provides three benefits: the same quality at lower bitrates, enhanced quality at the same bitrate, and, most recently, a combination of higher quality with lower bitrate.

Introduced at NAB last year, the technology now known as F1 applies its patented pre-and post-processing before and after compression to reduce video bitrates up to 50 percent while preserving image quality with any compression standard or implementation. The Faroudja F1 platform interoperates with all resolutions, frame rates, line structures, color depths, dynamic ranges, and bitrates operating efficiently on third-party compute-based encode platforms. In addition to home-based playback devices, F1 encoded streams can be played back on mobile devices including those with Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile operating systems in real-time and with minimal additional power draw to the device.

The company says the advantages of the F1 platform include:

A bitrate reduction for an equivalent image quality

A significant improvement of the image quality for low bitrate content

Video with two levels of resolution available at the same time For example, simultaneous availability of a 4K program in both 1080p and 4K resolutions, at no extra financial or bandwidth cost

F1 is aimed at professional markets such as content distribution networks, Over-the-Top (OTT) services, cloud-based services, VOD, TV broadcasting, and wherever there is a critical need for managing large volumes of video data. Service operators can use F1 to deliver high quality consumer front-of-screen, second-screen, and mobile viewing experiences.
