Storaro Receives Cine Gear’s Top Honor

Vittorio Storaro was honored with Cine Gear’s Cinematography Lifetime Achievement Award.Cine Gear Expo proved once again to be Hollywood’s pre-eminent gathering for members of the top motion picture, video and new media community to see the latest industry art, technology and trends. This year did not disappoint the nearly 16,000 attendees. Highlighting the 2016 Special Screenings was Vittorio Storaro being honored with Cine Gear’s Cinematography Lifetime Achievement Award.

The evening also featured an exclusive screening of Woody Allen’s much-anticipated feature, Cafe Society and subsequent interview by Jon Fauer, ASC with the film’s DP, three-time Academy Award-winner Storaro ASC, AIC. Storaro was cinematographer of over 48 features, including Apocalypse Now, Reds, and The Last Emperor.

The industry announcements were game-changers. Panavision and Light Iron unveiled the new Millennium DXL Camera, calling it a revolutionary breakthrough in image acquisition and workflow.

The Cine Gear Expo Film Series’ all-star panel of experts included Amy Vincent, ASC, Martina Buckley, and Bruce Logan, ASC, who judged the Student Short Film, Independent Short Film, and Commercial and Music Video competitions. Outstanding prizes were generously donated by sponsors including: 360 Designs, Mole-Richardson, Cush Light, On Set Headsets, G-Technology, LaCie, Script E Systems, SKB, Dinkum Systems, AutoDCP, Lifepower, and Blackmagic Design who contributed three Ursa Mini 4.6K cameras to the winners.

The Student Short Film winner, [solitary], from American Film Institute was directed and written by Derek J. Pastuszek, produced by Cedric Gamelin and Fabrizio Muscia, and Shadi Chaaban was director of photography. The prizewinner in the Independent Short Film category was Kingsland by director/cinematographer Jake Gabbay, and produced by Tom Gabbay and Bill Furman. My Friend Sin by director/cinematographer Mike Sanchez, and producer Suzi Sanchez took home the prize in the Commercial and Music Video category.

This year, the nearly 300 Cine Gear exhibitor booths were more dynamic and engaging than ever. The Best Outdoor Exhibit Design award went to DJI for their stage show that featured a reeling rooftop rumble, ready to be captured by their popular gimbal systems. The Best Indoor Booth went to Colt LED for their creative display of stunningly colorful DMXable tubular LED lights. VER received an Honorable Mention for their ever-changing Enhanced Environment.  

Next year Cine Gear Expo LA is slated to return to Paramount Studios on June 1 to 4, 2017.
