Elevating the Moviegoing Experience

Mon, 05/16/2022 - 12:38 -- Nick Dager

By all accounts, CinemaCon 2022, was a huge success. Attendance at the show, which was held in late March at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, was higher than even in pre-pandemic years. The overall mood of people afterward was of a renewed sense of confidence in the motion picture business as a whole and, especially, of the future of movie theatres as the best place to fully enjoy a feature film. I recently spoke with Wim Buyens, CEO of Cinionic, the joint venture between Barco, CGS, and ALPD, to get his feedback on the show. Not surprisingly, he too left CinemaCon feeling upbeat.

Although admissions in the European Union and the UK increased by 31.5 percent in 2021, it turned out to be another difficult year for cinema going in the region, according to a report from the European Audiovisual Observatory. Multiple factors, like the ongoing closures of cinemas, particularly in the first half of the year, the negative effect of attendance restrictions, possible hesitancy among audiences to return to cinemas, the return of US studio blockbusters and the differing strength of local films, contributed to the European theatrical markets making progress, but rather slow progress, in returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Doctor Strange Delivers

Wed, 05/11/2022 - 09:18 -- Nick Dager

The Marvel sequel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness delivered a colossal $449.8 million global opening, according to the latest report from the London-based analytics firm Gower Street. The launch was the second biggest of the pandemic-era behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also featured the character of Doctor Strange (as played by Benedict Cumberbatch). The new hit reportedly tracked just 17 percent behind No Way Home in like-for-like markets. Multiverse of Madness did not release in Russia, due to the ongoing studio boycott of the market following the invasion of Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia, where it was banned.
