The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has named the outstanding industry members who will be recognized October 29 at the SMPTE 2015 Awards Ceremony. The SMPTE 2015 Awards Ceremony, supported by Imax, is being held in conjunction with the SMPTE 2015 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles.

Smitty’s Cinemas Embrace Laser Projection

Smitty’s Cinemas was the brainchild of four brothers from Merrimac, Massachusetts who opened a single-screen cinema pub in early 1992. The idea of eating in big, comfortable chairs while watching a movie was an instant hit, and people are now enjoying five Smitty’s Cinemas across Maine and New Hampshire. The New England chain has installed laser projectors – NEC NC1100Ls – in several theatres. I recently spoke with one of the brothers, Tucker Smith, about their business model and about the new projectors.

Funimation Entertainment announced today that its limited event-style theatrical release of the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F has shattered industry expectations – closing out its official run at $8 million in North American box office gross. Opening just nine days ago with a $1.97 Million opening night box office, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F vaulted into the Top 10 list of highest grossing domestic anime films of all time.

Prime Focus Technologies Secures SoC2 Certification

Panasonic VariCam 35 4K-Camera Imager Wins HPA Award

The Hollywood Post Alliance has announced that Panasonic is a recipient of the organization's 2015 Engineering Excellence Award for the company's development of the 4K-camera imager in its VariCam 35 4K camera/recorder. The honor will be bestowed on November 12 during the tenth annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California.

Finalists Named for $50,000 Louisiana Film Prize

Executive director Gregory Kallenberg has announced the 20 finalists for the fourth annual Louisiana Film Prize. Each of the Top 20 films will compete at Louisiana Film Prize Festival Weekend October 2-4 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The winner will take home $50,000, one of the world's largest cash prizes for a short film.

China’s Jackie Chan Cinema Deploys AAM Screenwriter TMS

Arts Alliance Media has signed a deal with China’s Jackie Chan Cinema chain to deploy AAM’s Screenwriter Theatre Management System across more than 200 screens. The deal was concluded in conjunction with Beijing CServ, a professional IT and cinema TMS provider and one of AAM’s Chinese reseller partners.
