New Documentary Looks at the Importance of Soil

Two acclaimed documentary film production companies are teaming up to chronicle an unlikely contender in the battle to halt climate change: soil. A co-production of The Big Picture Ranch (Fuel, The Big Fix, Pump) and Benenson Productions (Dirt! The Movie, The Hadza: Last of the First), Kiss the Ground will be produced by Josh Tickell, Rebecca Harrell Tickell and Bill Benenson. Josh and Rebecca Tickell are directing. Laurie Benenson, Anna Getty and Michelle Lerach are executive producing.

Guardians 2 Turns to Red 8K, Codex

Director James Gunn is using Red’s 8K Weapon camera on Marvel’s latest cosmic adventures in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2. Behind-the-scenes, Codex workflow systems, operated by Santa Monica, London and Atlanta based production services company Shed, are enabling the smooth and speedy transition of a river of 8K data from on-set into post production. The cinematographer on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is Henry Braham BSC, who previously used Red Epic cameras on The Legend of Tarzan. He is one of the first DPs to deploy the new Red Weapon camera, fitted with the 8K Red Dragon sensor, on a long-form show, describing it as “the little big camera. Perfectly counterintuitive. And perfect for this production.”

VFX Supervisor Dan Akers Joins Blur Studio

Academy Award- and Emmy-nominated animation, VFX and design company Blur Studio has hired Dan Akers as visual effects supervisor. With nearly 15 years of experience in the VFX industry, Akers’ recent photo-realistic work for online shooter Destiny and Kia Motors was recognized with 2015 VES Award nominations, with his efforts for Destiny also taking home Best Visual Effects honors at AICP 2015.

Alchemy Provides Foley for The Bandit

Alchemy Post Sound provided Foley services for The Bandit, director Jesse Moss’ exhilarating documentary about Burt Reynolds, the late director and stuntman Hal Needham and the making of the iconic 1977 action-comedy Smokey and the Bandit. Working under the direction of supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Tom Paul, Foley artist Leslie Bloome and his crew recreated the sounds of brawling stuntmen, a rocket-propelled car and 100-foot body falls to accompany the film’s mind-blowing stunts and action scenes.

A Strong Optical Personality

When director of photography Julián Apezteguia, ADF (La Asociación de Autores de Fotografía Cinematográfica Argentina — Argentinian Society of Cinematographers) got the chance to work with director Pablo Trapero for the second time, on the director's latest film El Clan — a dark story set in the 1980's about a family of kidnappers and murderers — they used a full range of Cooke Anamorphic/i lenses to give the film a “strong optical personality.”
