Spider-Man Coming to ScreenX Theatres

Sony Pictures has announced that Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released in the 270-degree panoramic ScreenX format on July 2nd. It marks the first Sony Pictures film to be converted into ScreenX. Previously Sony Pictures released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 4DX, another immersive cinema technology from CJ 4DPlex. The new Spider-Man will also be available in 4DX.

Christie to Debut New Projectors at CinemaCon

At CinemaCon next week Christie will launch the CP4330-RGB projector, a higher-lumen output version of the CP4325-RGB, at the show, as well as preview two new models coming off of Christie’s world-class manufacturing lines in 2019. In addition, all of the screenings at the Colosseum will be delivered by either Christie’s tried-and-true CP4230 projectors installed there, or by Dolby Vision laser projectors, which are manufactured by Christie.

DCI Must Do More on HDR

In November, the Digital Cinema Initiative posted two new draft documents towards a high dynamic range specification for cinema titled Direct View Display D-Cinema Addendum and High Dynamic Range D-Cinema Addendum. They represent a major improvement over DCI’s previous draft, which I wrote about last September [DCI Has Lost Its Way https://bit.ly/2Omcnoa]. In contrast, the new documents are well written, detailed, explanatory and responsive. But questions remain and cost matters, leaving plenty of room for improvement.

Volfoni's Triple-Beam Patent Granted in Russia

Volfoni has been granted Russian patent number RU2669544C2 for its triple-beam technology, which underlies the company’s SmartCrystal Diamond passive three dimensional cinema product. This patent had already previously been granted in both the USA and China. The extension in Russia ensures that Volfoni’s technologies are fully protected around the world.
