ASC Names Student Heritage Award Finalists
The American Society of Cinematographers has chosen 13 nominees for its 2017 Student Heritage Awards recognizing graduate, undergraduate and documentary student works. This year’s nominees are students from 10 different U.S. film schools. Winners will be announced on October 14.
SMPTE Symposium to Explore Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning
The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers has announced the program for its 2017 Symposium: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Digital Media Creation: The Promise, the Reality, and the (Scary?) Future. The October 23 event, which will take place at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, California, immediately precedes the SMPTE 2017 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition.
AFI to Name Outstanding Teams in Film & Television
Recognizing the year's most outstanding achievements in the art of the moving image, AFI will honor the talented teams that created the 10 most outstanding films and 10 most outstanding television programs of the year at a private luncheon in Los Angeles on January 5, 2018.
Dolby Wins IBC’s Highest Honor
IBC will award its highest accolade, the International Honor for Excellence, to Dolby Laboratories. In IBC’s 50th anniversary year, the award reflects on more than 50 years of continual improvement in sound from Dolby, which culminated with the 2012 release of Brave in Dolby Atmos.
QSC Wins Third Teddy Award
For the third year in a row, QSC Cinema has been honored with the prestigious Teddy Award, an annual award voted by dealer members of the International Cinema Technology Association. The award recognizes the ICTA Manufacturer that best exemplifies the progressive principles of product development, and provides the dealers with service and up-to-date technical and sales information, while supporting the status of their product without qualification. The Teddy Award was presented to QSC at the recent annual ICTA Convention in Berlin, Germany.
SMPTE Names 2017 Fellows
SMPTE today announced that it will elevate 12 industry leaders to the status of SMPTE Fellow. This honor is conferred on individuals who have, through their proficiency and contributions to the industry, attained an outstanding rank among members of the Society. SMPTE Hollywood Section Elects New Officers
The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced the results of its 2017 section elections. Newly elected to a one-year term as Hollywood Section officers are Jim DeFilippis as section chair and Steve Wong as secretary/treasurer.
ASC Technology Committee Changes Focus, Name
The ASC Technology Committee has been renamed the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council. Established in 2003, the committee has helped organize efforts to study and assess subjects ranging from digital cameras and lens optics to motion imaging workflows, advanced color management, virtual production techniques digital archiving and more recently virtual reality.
Art Directors Guild Adds Awards Category
Production Design in Animation: Celebrating 100 Years of Imagination will be this year's theme for the Art Directors Guild 22nd Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards where the guild will debut its new award category Excellence in Production Design for an Animated Feature Film.
