The American Society of Cinematographers has chosen 13 nominees for its 2017 Student Heritage Awards recognizing graduate, undergraduate and documentary student works. This year’s nominees are students from 10 different U.S. film schools. Winners will be announced on October 14.
The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers has announced the program for its 2017 Symposium: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Digital Media Creation: The Promise, the Reality, and the (Scary?) Future. The October 23 event, which will take place at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, California, immediately precedes the SMPTE 2017 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition.

For the third year in a row, QSC Cinema has been honored with the prestigious Teddy Award, an annual award voted by dealer members of the International Cinema Technology Association. SMPTE today announced that it will elevate 12 industry leaders to the status of SMPTE Fellow. This honor is conferred on individuals who have, through their proficiency and contributions to the industry, attained an outstanding rank among members of the Society. The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced the results of its 2017 section elections. Newly elected to a one-year term as Hollywood Section officers are Jim DeFilippis as section chair and Steve Wong as secretary/treasurer.
The ASC Technology Committee has been renamed the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council. Established in 2003, the committee has helped organize efforts to study and assess subjects ranging from digital cameras and lens optics to motion imaging workflows, advanced color management, virtual production techniques digital archiving and more recently virtual reality.
Production Design in Animation: Celebrating 100 Years of Imagination will be this year's theme for the Art Directors Guild 22nd Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards where the guild will debut its new award category Excellence in Production Design for an Animated Feature Film.
