Caranicas Named Recipient of First HPA Legacy Award

The Hollywood Professional Association and the HPA Awards Committee have announced that respected journalist Peter Caranicas will be honored with the HPA Legacy Award. Caranicas is the first recipient of the honor. Given only at the discretion of the HPA Awards Committee and HPA Board of Directors, the HPA Legacy Award honors inspiring leaders, mentors, influencers, and those who have made consistent and valuable contributions to the industry. The award will be bestowed on November 21 at the 14th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Professional Association and the HPA Awards Committee have announced that respected journalist Peter Caranicas will be honored with the HPA Legacy Award.Caranicas has covered film, TV, media, advertising, and technology in various roles including publisher, editor, and writer for the past forty years. He has written about the birth of satellite broadcasting and cable, the rise of digital technology and the internet, as well as the advent of social media and immersive content. Currently deputy editor at Variety, where he has been since his appointment in 2008 as managing editor, Features, Caranicas is in charge of Weekly Variety’s Artisans pages, which cover film and TV crafts such as cinematography, production and costume design, sound, editing and visual effects.

Well known in the industry as a trusted source of information, Caranicas wrote and served editorial stints at Video PublisherVideographyViewWorld ScreenBMEShootFilm & VideoTVB, and Below the Line.

Caranicas said, “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by the HPA. Over the course of my career, from the beginning right up until the stories I filed this week, I’ve been engaged in an industry characterized by its brilliance and talent.  I’ve never been bored! This an incredible time and I’m honored to play a role. I love this business and the smart people who work in it.”

The gala evening will also celebrate excellence in twelve craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects, the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award for Robert Legato, the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation for They Shall Not Grow Old, and the winners of the HPA Engineering Excellence Awards.
