Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards and one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, will be held June 11 in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been the festival’s main collaborator for the Asia International Competition and Japan Competition of the festival since 2004. TMG presents The Governor of Tokyo Award for the Best Short winners of these two competitions, in addition to the new Cinematic Tokyo Competition.

This year, the city and festival collaborated to produce Home Away From Home, a short film to promote the appeal of Tokyo for people in and out of the country. The short film features world-renown French actress Irène Jacob of The Double Life of Veronique and Three Colors: Red, Thailand’s national star James Jirayu and Junko Abe of Still the Water, which was directed by Naomi Kawase. It’s a fantasy story where Tokyo crosses the drama in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Home Away From Home will be screened in the newly established Cinematic Tokyo Program, where short films that carry elements of Tokyo are presented and awarded. Marking its 19th year, the festival has received over 9,000 short films sent from over 140 countries and regions. Of those, 250 will be shown at the festival.
