New Musical Gets Sweet Spots

Thu, 08/11/2016 - 13:36 -- Nick Dager

A mouth-watering new advertising campaign from AKA NYC promotes next year’s premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the new musical as bringing a special excitement to New York City. In the first of three teaser spots breaking online this week, the show’s arrival in Manhattan is heralded by a thick bank of purple clouds that spreads over the city, and the appearance of a mysterious figure in white spats and a purple coat. Rolling out over the next several weeks, additional spots depict a city increasingly electrified by Wonka magic. The campaign’s climactic ad is a visual effects tour de force as the eccentric candy maker works his magic on some of New York’s most familiar landmarks…with spectacularly sweet results.

Enhancing the Magic

Wed, 08/10/2016 - 10:04 -- Nick Dager

One of the most memorable episodes of season 6 of Game of Thrones was the Battle of the Bastards, in which Meereen is under attack by a huge fleet of ships firing flaming pitch at the city. It was also just a sample of the effects work that Rodeo FX did for the series. The studio created FX simulation of flaming cannonballs, shot from ships in the harbor and ripping holes in buildings while CG smoke and particles fill the air. The Dothraki Horde comes to the rescue, during which there is a CG decapitation. Daenerys climbs on Drogon, flies across the Meereen gates, and gets the dragon to breathe fire to destroy the ships.

When Luke Sauer, veteran director of photography of reality television production, including Wives with Knives and I (Almost) Got Away with It, was selected to shoot the Lasso he knew it would involve a lot of night shoots. Lasso, a survive the night thriller directed by Evan Cecil, centers around senior community center workers Kit (Lindsey Morgan) and Simon (Andrew Jacobs), whose lives are turned upside when they find themselves fighting to stay alive against a group of bloodthirsty cowboys from the local rodeo. Lasso is his first feature project. Currently in post-production, the film is slated for an early 2017 release.

Making a Killing

Fri, 08/05/2016 - 10:13 -- Nick Dager

Event cinema works best when the programming is directed at groups passionate about a specific cause. In those instances the movie theatre turns into a town square where people can share thoughts and ideas about how to make their cause a reality. A case in point, the theatrical run for Making a Killing: Guns, Greed and the NRA is scheduled for August 12-18 in Los Angeles and August 19-25 in New York City. Brave New Films, the documentary and short film production company headed by award-winning filmmaker Robert Greenwald, will partner with gun-violence prevention activists to turn multiple screenings during the theatrical run into opportunities to inform audiences about the issue and to organize against the forces of gun profiteering.
