Global Cinema Advertising Association, UN Celebrate World Food Day

Last week, in recognition of World Food Day, the Global Cinema Advertising Association (SAWA) and the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched a global cinema campaign to spotlight the vital role small-scale farmers play in feeding the world. A New Day, an award-winning 45-second cinema spot, highlighting the lives of rural people and farming communities in Tunisia and northern Africa—one of the world’s harshest and most fragile desert environments—will be screened across cinema theatres worldwide.

Second Saudi Film Confex Held in Riyadh

The Minister of Culture and chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Film Commission Prince Badr bin Abdullah inaugurated the second edition of the Saudi Film Confex in Riyadh last week. In his speech, Prince Badr unveiled the ministry's plan to make Saudi Arabia a hub for film production. "We seek to make the Kingdom a regional and international hub for film production, as well as to empower talents, and open up horizons for strategic partnerships that contribute to developing the infrastructure and enhance the screening and distribution sector," he said.

Saving White Bird

Up to the moment the cameras rolled, cinematographer Matthias Königswieser, AAC wasn’t sure White Bird: A Wonder Story would actually happen. Production of the feature film began in Prague in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, when most of Europe was on lockdown. Transporting crew, talent, and equipment required herculean effort and contingency planning, and if key personnel or talent tested positive for covid, the entire schedule could be upended, or the production could be shut down. Lay on top of those difficulties a cold, mucky winter, and you have a recipe for what could have been a disaster.

Carbonara to Receive SMPTE 2024 Presidential Proclamation

Baylor University’s Corey P. Carbonara, Ph.D., professor of film and digital media, master teacher and an innovator in advancing new frontiers in media production technology, has been selected as one of seven recipients of the 2024 Presidential Proclamation from SMPTE, the society of media professionals, technologists and engineers. Established in 1982, the award recognizes individuals of established and outstanding status and reputation in the motion picture and television industries worldwide.
