Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical, a special limited engagement cinematic event directed by Brett Sullivan for Disney Theatrical Productions and Fathom Events, debuts this month in theaters worldwide. Co-founders of Steam Motion and Sound, he and lighting director Clayton Jacobsen have a lot of experience in translating theatrical productions to the screen, including the musicals Billy Elliot, Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies.

Making Event Cinema History

Later this week, audiences across the United States will have the chance to watch a film that promises to redefine the concept of event cinema. On January 19, Oscar-nominated actor Woody Harrelson will direct and star in an unprecedented live feature film event, Lost in London Live. Harrelson, who also wrote the film, will be joined by co-stars Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson. Fathom Events will present the film live in 550 theatres in the US. Afterwards, he’ll participate in a question and answer session about the experience. No matter what happens, Lost in London is certain to make event cinema history.

Event cinema will take center stage at CinemaCon April 12th at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas when Fathom Events honors BBC Worldwide North America with its Excellence in Event Cinema Award. The award is for their record-breaking success in global event cinema, featuring the Doctor Who series. The award will be presented by Fathom Events CEO, John Rubey, and accepted by BBC Worldwide executive vice president of franchise and digital enterprises, Soumya Sriraman.

BBC, Fathom Honor Shakespeare with Bill

BBC Worldwide North America and Fathom Events will commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with the release of Bill, a comedic, fictional tale of how Bill became William Shakespeare. This offbeat Monty Python-esque farce stars Mathew Baynton (The Wrong Mans, Bob The Builder) as William Shakespeare along with husband and wife duo – Damian Lewis (Billions, Homeland) as swashbuckling Sir Richard Hawkins and Helen McCrory (Peaky Blinders, Fantastic Mr. Fox) as Queen Elizabeth.

Interactive Guides Enhance Event Cinema

To enhance the Lincoln Center at the Movies experience for audiences of all ages, Lincoln Center Education has created interactive guides to accompany screenings of the Great American Dance series. Presented by Lincoln Center in association with Fathom Events, Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance brings spectacular dance performances by four of America’s leading dance companies to approximately 600 movie theaters throughout the U.S. in the fall and winter of 2015. The on-screen hosts for the series are Live with Kelly and Michael stars Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. The series opened on September 24 with San Francisco Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet.

Bringing New Audiences to Movie Theatres

Kymberli Frueh, vice president, programming of Fathom Events, is passionate about her work. In her decade with the event cinema company she has seen the business experience steady growth and is proud of the revenue she’s added to the bottom line. But, she said, there are other positives. “It’s not just about the ticket sales,” said Frueh. “Look at what kind of audiences we’re bringing back to the theatre. These are people who haven’t been inside a movie theatre in years.”

Carmike, Fathom Plan Alternative Content in 150 Theaters in 2015

Carmike Cinemas today announced it has entered into a strategic partnership with Fathom Events to bring an enhanced and significantly expanded alternative programming offering to 150 Carmike locations in 31 states by the end of 2015. The initiative will encompass more than half of all Carmike locations and marks the single largest alternative programming deployment to date among major domestic movie theater operators. Carmike’s expanded alternative program offering will bring guests notable sporting events, great performances and other unique entertainment from around the world, complementing Carmike’s leading Hollywood studio movie slate through-out the year.
