Movies for Grownups: Not What You Think

Fri, 04/29/2016 - 13:47 -- Nick Dager

Movies for Grownups is the name of an initiative that the AARP launched in 2002. It is also the name of one of the more interesting panel discussions that took place earlier this month during CinemaCon 2016 in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas. Despite its title, the presentation was less about movies for older audiences than it was about the need for all exhibitors to truly understand their audience. As one of the speakers put it, exhibitors need to “become deeply engaged in the community.”

For the second year in a row, Digital Cinema Report has selected what we consider to be the best new technology at CinemaCon for a 2016 Catalyst Award.

CinemaCon 2016: Making Strides

Wed, 04/27/2016 - 11:38 -- Nick Dager

Replacing the world’s 35mm projectors with digital ones was the beginning of the digital cinema era, not the end. As was the case last year, the major technology topics of CinemaCon 2016 were laser projection, theatre sound, and immersive cinema. Leading exhibitors understand that their future success demands that they rethink virtually every aspect of their businesses, and that they must transform their movie theatres into entertainment centers designed to serve their specific communities. The best of them are making great strides to that end and CinemaCon 2016 brimmed with their energy.
