Celebrating Firsts with Baba Joon

Baba Joon means papa as a term of endearment expressing respect for the father of the family in a traditional Iranian home. A movie named Baba Joon was selected as best film at the most recent Ofir Awards, the Israeli version of the Academy Awards. The film portrays the human struggle many face when having to choose between tradition and personal freedom, dealing with the challenges that the generational gap can cause. Baba Joon is the feature-length directorial debut of screenwriter director Yuval Delshad, an Israeli and himself, the son of Iranian immigrants. Shot with a Red Epic, Baba Joon was also the first feature completed on Tel Aviv-based Edit Studio's Mistika.

Digital Intermediate Producer Colin Davis Joins Post Factory NY

As part of its ongoing effort to grow its resources for motion picture finishing, Post Factory NY, a Sim Group company, has hired Colin Davis as digital intermediate producer. Davis, who arrives from a similar position with Company 3, New York, will oversee feature film and documentary projects undergoing editorial conforming, color grading and other finishing services. He will also be involved in developing the facility’s workflow procedures and service offering. In his first project for Post Factory NY, Davis oversaw final color grading and deliverables for the upcoming Lionsgate release American Ultra.

The Room Transforms a Black and White World

The Room, the boutique finishing facility located within Technicolor-PostWorks, New York, recently completed two months of post-production finishing on The Giver, the new film from director Phillip Noyce and The Weinstein Company. In a project involving numerous creative and technical challenges, the facility handled editorial conforming and color grading. The latter included applying the finishing touch to an onscreen world that undergoes a gradual transition from black & white to color.

Super Star Power Productions Brings Post Home

Super Star Power Productions in Los Angeles is a combination post-production facility and theater that offers a seamless 4K pipeline from review of uncompressed 4K image files taken directly from 4K cameras, through color grading at 4K, to a Qube XP-I server and Xi IMB and projected via Barco's new DP4K-P post-production projector. Hollywood producers and directors of feature films will now be able to review 4K images, color grade at 4K in real time and generate 4K digital cinema packages for final quality control, all from a single 4K projector in a home-like setting.

Technicolor-PostWorks New York Completes Post for Noah

Technicolor-PostWorks New York did the post on Noah.Technicolor-PostWorks New York marked its third collaboration with Darren Aronofsky in providing post-production services for Noah, the director’s epic inspired by the story of Noah in the Old Testament. The facility provided everything from 35mm film processing to editorial conforming and final color grading.

Assimilate Shows Scratch with ProRes for Windows at NAB 2014

At the National Association of Broadcasters convention held earlier this month in Las Vegas, Assimilate announced v8 versions of its popular Scratch and Scratch Lab software, allowing users to encode Apple ProRes files on Microsoft Windows 7/8-based PCs. Scratch and Scratch Lab customers can now use both the OS X and Windows versions of the software. Artists either on-set, or in post-production are guaranteed the highest possible quality and encoding speeds on each platform. In addition, Scratch 4K is now available at Scratch 2K prices.

Spectrum Films Celebrates Half a Century

Celebrating its 50-year anniversary, Fox Studios Australia based specialist editorial facilities provider Spectrum Films has selected Mistika to drive its expansion of high-end color grading, finishing and digital intermediates using SGO's proven technology at the helm. This is the first real-time 4K-capable Mistika system in Australia, and includes advanced DI grading as well as Digital Cinema Package tools enabling encrypted or un-encrypted DCP creation directly from camera raw and other media files directly off the timeline.
