Broadway Cinema to Add Four New Imax Screens in Shanghai

With box office numbers in China returning to pre-pandemic levels and on the heels of a record-breaking Chinese New Year, Broadway Cinema has agreed to add four new Imax theaters across several iconic locations in downtown Shanghai, including One East, located in the heart of Huangpu Riverside, the first flagship property managed and operated by Brookfield Properties in Shanghai.

Detective Chinatown 3 Sets Box Office Record

In a clear sign that audiences will return to theatres once they’re open and have a good movie to present, the Global Cinema Federation today celebrated the record opening weekend in China of Detective Chinatown 3. The title set a single market record for opening day of $163 million and opening weekend $397 million. This comes one year after China’s 70,000 screens were completely shuttered for 2020’s Lunar New Year celebrations.

VFX Revive an Ancient Chinese Tale

Snake White: Love Endures is a mesmerizing new independent film based on a timeless Chinese love fable. The earliest known written version of the story appeared in the 1600s during the Ming Dynasty. Over the centuries it has been repeated many times in operas, movies and television series and is considered to be one of China's Four Great Folktales. This latest film, while faithful to the spirit of the original folktale, is almost in a category of its own as it combines traditional Cantonese opera with modern music and breathtaking visual effects.

Rising Sun Pictures Wins VFX Award for The Eight Hundred

Rising Sun Pictures has won the 2020 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Visual Effects or Animation for its work on the Chinese World War II epic The Eight Hundred. The Adelaide-based studio helped to recreate the 1937 Battle of Shanghai, where a small Chinese army mounted a determined defense against a larger invading army. Directed by Guan Hu and produced by Haining Seventh Image Movie & Media Co Ltd, The Eight Hundred is among the most successful Chinese movies ever made, and the highest grossing film globally for 2020, having earned $446 million (RMB 3.02 billion) in total box office.

RealD 3D Patents Upheld in China

RealD announced today that the China National Intellectual Property Administration has upheld the company’s patent on 3D cinema projection systems in China. The decision was issued by the Patent Review Board, a subsidiary office of CNIPA. According to the PRB's announcement, all of the petitioner's invalidation arguments were rejected, and RealD's patent is maintained in full.

Suning Cinema Opens All Christie RGB Laser Multiplex

Suning Cinema in Xi’an, China has installed Christie RGB laser cinema projectors in all of the auditoriums in its new multiplex. Located on the fifth floor of Zhengshang Financial Plaza in the city’s bustling Economic and Technological Development Zone, Xi’an Zhengshang Suning Cinema is the exhibitor’s first multiplex to be fully equipped with Christie RGB laser cinema projectors.

Wanying to Open Ten New Dolby Cinemas

Dolby Laboratories and China’s Wanying Cinema Line today announced that the two companies have strengthened cooperation to further extend the Dolby Cinema experience to more moviegoers with a plan to add more than ten additional Dolby Cinema locations across China. Wanying Cinema Line is wholly owned by China Resources Land, a leading commercial real estate company in China.

The Effects of The Eight Hundred

Rising Sun Pictures served as a principal visual effects provider for The Eight Hundred, the epic war film from director Guan Hu and Huayi Brothers Media and Haining Seventh Image Movie & Media Company. To date, the film has already earned more than $200 million in Chinese theatres alone. The film centers on the true story of the 1937 Battle of Shanghai where a Chinese battalion mounted a determined defense of the Sihang Warehouse from the invasion of the Japanese army. Working in collaboration with BangBang Pictures, Beijing, and overall VFX supervisor RSP’s Tim Crosbie, RSP contributed scores of richly detailed, seamless visual effects to support the film’s riveting combat scenes, all set around a massive warehouse complex near the city center.
