New Report Tracks Promotion of European Films on VOD Platforms

The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, has just updated its annual report on the prominence of European films and programs on transactional, pay-per-view video on demand platforms. This new analysis of the prominence of films and TV series covers 57 leading services from seven European countries.

Europe’s International Union of Cinemas Renews Call for Government Support

Following recent decisions requiring the closure of cinemas across a number of European countries in response to spikes in COVID-19, European trade body the International Union of Cinemas in a statement today renewed its call to national governments, the European Commission and the European Parliament to provide further public funding support to the sector to ensure that cinemas are able to survive the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis.

In parallel, the application of copyright rules attached to audiovisual works and their exploitation along the value chain are becoming increasingly complex. Obtaining rights from the rights holders involved in a given project and, in some cases, acquiring licenses for the use of pre-existing works, is an essential aspect of the work of film producers and marks an indispensable preliminary step before they can grant licenses for the exploitation of the work to the various exploitation channels.
