Like many people with a musical background, multi-award-winning recording and mixing engineer Chris Fogel, CAS, made the jump from playing instruments to working behind-the-scenes. A trumpet player by training, Fogel has spent more than two decades recording and mixing music for high-profile musicians, films and television projects alike. Most recently, Fogel worked on the scores for The Mandalorian, Tenet, Black Panther and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood; portions of season eight of Games of Thrones, as well as music by Alanis Morissette, Childish Gambino and many others, from ELBO Studios, of which he is co-owner.

Pay-It-Forward Contest Winners Named

DPA Microphone and Rycote have announced the winners of the Pay-It-Forward Film Contest Giveaway. The brands joined forces to support the film industry during these unprecedented times by offering first-time and indie filmmakers the opportunity to win a customized DPA/Rycote filming kit. The winners of the contest are Jacob Deming of the United States, Lijie Cheng of Singapore and Sergey Martynyuk of Austria. P-Valley Posts in New York City

Editorial and post-production finishing for the eight-episode, first season of the hit Starz series P-Valley was centered in New York as several Post New York Alliance member companies helped bring the fictional small town of Chucalissa, Mississippi vibrantly to life. New York City facilities Goldcrest Post, Harbor and Technicolor PostWorks each played a role in the project, as did Foley specialist Alchemy Post Sound and VFX studio The Molecule.

Sometimes Size Really Does Matter

When Gene Martin, owner of Audio Department and Sound Guy Solutions, was presented with a technical nightmare for a commercial client in the early days of COVID, his sound mixer gears started turning. With scenes being shot in separate areas around the U.S., Martin had to juggle as many as 10 different drop kit audio packages at a time. As he was on-location with the main crew in California, he also had to account for remote workflows as well as social distancing protocols.

Deluxe One Dub Receives Two NAB Show Product of the Year Awards

At a time when it is critical for the media and entertainment industry to have access to reliable and effective remote workflow solutions, Deluxe has been recognized for its remote audio cloud recording tool, One Dub a module of the Deluxe One platform. The technology received two 2020 NAB Show Product of the Year Awards, one for Audio Production, Process and Networking and another for Remote Production. The winners were announced October 20 during the awards ceremony, which took place in the NAB Show New York digital experience.

Éclair Versioning & Accessibility Expands in France, Spain

Undeterred by this year’s COVID-19 health challenges, Éclair Versioning & Accessibility has added a new state-of-the-art recording room to the Vanves’ facility as part of a wider reorganization of its Parisian studios, which included changes and upgrades to a number of its recording studios. The company has also opened a new dubbing facility in Barcelona.

The Challenges of Production Sound

Like many of his colleagues in the sound production industry, Scott Harber began his audio career as a musician, more specifically as a member of a San Diego punk rock band. Over the course of his nearly 30-year career, Harber has worked on leading TV and film productions, including Borat, Noctunal Animals, Get Smart, Hell’s Kitchen, Gangster Squad, Wilfred and Castle, to name a few. He also owns Dang Me Sound, a production sound company based in Los Angeles. I recently spoke with Harber about some of the highlights his long career and the challenges of production sound.
