Africa Cinematography Festival to be held in November

Legacy Empire Management has announced that the first Africa Cinematography Festival will take place in Lagos, Nigeria in the second week of November. “The ACF will provide a platform for film equipment manufacturers to reach the desired market with their latest offerings and technologies.” Said Legacy Empire’s CEO Henry Emenike. “Quality filmmaking is tied directly to good technologies; sadly, there is a huge gap in this aspect among film makers.”

Christie Returns to SIFF

Christie is the exclusive digital projection partner for the Shanghai International Film Festival for the ninth consecutive year. The event, which is taking place from June 17-26, is China’s only non-specialized competitive international film festival accredited by the Paris-based Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films. Currently in its 20th year, the star-studded festival kicked off in style with the screening of Danish Academy Award-winning film and television director Bille August’s latest film The Chinese Widow starring Emile Hirsch and Crystal Liu, while Chinese director Zheng Chang’s crime action film Detonator will close the event.

Dolby’s Escape Premieres at Tribeca

Dolby’s short animated film Escape, a sequel to two-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning short Silent, premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Chosen for the Tribeca short film category out of a record number of 4,38 submissions, Escape is the story of a lone space explorer who crash-lands on a desolate planet and must find a way to make her new home habitable.

Canadian Cinema Takes Center Stage April 18-23

A celebration of Canadian cinema will take place in Los Angeles April 18-23 with a variety of screenings at The Cinefamily and The Aero. The Los Angeles marathon of screenings will kick-off on the evening of April 18 with Polytechnique (Denis Villeneuve) and continue on, April 19 with screenings of The Saddest Music in the World (Guy Maddin), Meatballs (Ivan Reitman), Strange Brew (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) and Incendies (Denis Villeneuve).

AFI Statement on Asghar Farhadi

The American Film Institute released a statement today regarding award-winning Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who will not attend this year’s Academy Award ceremonies because of President Donald Trump’s executive order banning Iranians from entering the country. Farhadi, who received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for A Separation, is nominated again in the same category this year.
