Redefining the Movie Theatre

Over the past decade digital cinema technology has spurred the transformation of movie theatres from the traditional assembly line model – buy your ticket, buy your popcorn and soda, take your seats, watch the movie, and exit – into entertainment centers where people are encouraged to linger and enjoy a variety of activities, enjoy a nice meal and, of course, see a movie. While Santikos Theatres has seen its share of industry firsts its newest venture, opening today, is more than simply a new first. Yes, the Casa Blanca in San Antonio, Texas, is the first all-laser projection movie theatre in the world. But, more than that, it sets a very high standard for what a movie theatre in the 21st century can be.

The Christie 6P laser projection at the National Infantry Museum’s Giant Screen Theater in Columbus, Georgia is earning applause from the public, school groups, veterans and active duty service members. Installed by AV industry pioneer D3D Cinema, the two Christie Solaria CP42LH 6P laser projectors enable the theater to show a range of 3D content and Hollywood blockbusters – as well as alternative content and live events – to better align the theater with the museum’s mission of providing guests with an immersive experience of the United States Army Infantry’s valorous history.

Christie Fills Xi’an Oscar’s Largest Screen

Located in Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, in the recently opened CityOn Xi’an shopping mall in the heart of the city’s new Central Business District and administrative center, the Xi’an Oscar CityOn International Cinema has nine halls, including a premium large screen auditorium fitted with a 24.2-meter wide screen – the largest in Xi’an. It is the first cinema in central China to be equipped with the Christie CP42LH 3DLP 4K RGB laser projection system.

Laser protection was one of the big stories of last month’s CinemaCon convention. All four projector manufacturers featured laser technology in their exhibits and all four announced significant sales. Many people can claim some measure of credit for laser projection’s success in digital cinema but none more than Bill Beck. His advocacy for the technology, which goes back more than a decade, has justifiably earned him the title The Laser Guy.

Santikos Names GDC as IMB Provider

Santikos Entertainment has extended its five-year strategic partnership with GDC Technology by signing a new agreement to install GDC integrated media blocks in conjunction with its transition to all-laser projection. Under the agreement, GDC Technology will deploy a total of 70 units of its SX-3000 Integrated Media Block with Enterprise Storage Plus, which provides 4TB of storage, with laser phosphor projectors.

Favreau Talks about The Jungle Book

Disney’s The Jungle Book is the first film released in the U.S. in Dolby Vision 3D and is available at two Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime locations: Empire 25 in New York City and Hawthorn in Chicago. In this video director John Favreau shares how the movie sets a new bar for beautiful visuals and the 3D movie-going experience. “Whatever hesitation people might have in going to see a 3D movie I think completely goes away,” he says, “because the brightness of the image, the quality of the lenses and the fact that…the glasses just disappear and you’re watching a crystal clear image where you feel like you just climb onto the screen is a game changer.”

Christie Introduces the CP2208-LP Laser Phosphor Projector

Christie is expanding its series of laser phosphor projection systems with the global launch of the DCI-compliant Christie CP2208-LP digital cinema projector. Delivering up to 11,000 native lumens of brightness, the 3D capable Christie CP2208-LP is virtually maintenance free with no lamps to change, offers a lower total cost of operation, and provides a lower carbon footprint for theater owners. It is available as a complete system with the optional Christie IMB-S2 integrated media block and also works with other, popular Series-2 IMBs. It delivers superior content flexibility with its ability to display DCI content, alternative content, 3D content and content developed at high frame rates.

Christie Announces CinemaCon 2016 Highlights

Christie will showcase its full range of products at CinemaCon 2016 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, April 11-14. The company’s Booth – 2303A – will feature various Christie products and video case studies. In addition, Christie laser projection will be used for select Colosseum events, there will be Christie digital signage in the Coke lounge and registration area, and product launch demonstrations in private meeting rooms.

Barco to Highlight CinemaBarco at CinemaCon 2016

Barco will highlight CinemaBarco at CinemaCon 2016, April 11-14 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. CinemaBarco includes Barco Laser Projection, Barco Escape, AuroMax and Barco Lobby Experience. Recent independent and exhibitor surveys indicate that moviegoers give the highest image quality scores to laser-illuminated screens. They also state that this premium experience would entice them to visit the cinema more frequently and that patrons are willing to pay a higher ticket price for the laser-projected movie, resulting in significantly higher revenues for exhibitors.
