The Catalyst Award 2019: HFR, LED and HDR

In a week or so, industry professionals from around the world will gather at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas for this year’s CinemaCon, the annual convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners. There, from April 1-4, they will discuss the latest issues, trends and technologies in motion picture distribution and exhibition. For many of them, new technology will be the focus of their attention. This year’s technology conversations seem certain to include three acronyms in particular: HFR, LED and HDR. Chances are, technology centered on one of these will earn a Catalyst Award. But there are always surprises at CinemaCon.

Sony Re-Releasing Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove

Park Circus, in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, is re-releasing Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 masterpiece Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Restored in 4K, the film will open in UK cinemas May 17 and include an extended run at the BFI Southbank as part of a special Kubrick season.

Gone with the Wind Sets Event Cinema Records

Classic film presentations that give audiences the rare opportunity to see cinematic favorites commercial-free on the big screen have generated $5.53 million since the beginning of the year, Fathom Events announced today. The results were led by the 80th anniversary of Gone with the Wind, which grossed $2.23 million in just six nationwide screenings across four dates, setting a record as the highest-grossing classic film for Fathom Events and the event cinema industry. The previous record was set in January by Fathom and another Warner Bros. milestone from 1939, The Wizard of Oz.

Post house DigitalFilm Tree CEO Ramy Katrib congratulated CBS and producers Christopher Molnar and Erik Whitmyre on the 10th season of NCIS: Los Angeles. Katrib said that in nearly 250 episodes DFT has averaged 250-400 effects per show. He thanked producers on NCIS: Los Angeles for giving DFT their trust and allowing them to achieve several technology firsts

Zeiler to Join Arri’s Executive Board

The Supervisory Board of the Arri Group, at its meeting yesterday, decided to appoint a new member to its executive board of the Arri Group which currently consists of Dr. Joerg Pohlman and Dr. Michael Neuhaeuser. Effective April 1 Markus Zeiler, until now head of the business unit lighting at Arri, will join them on the board. His new area of responsibility within the board will be the management of Arri’s global rental business.

Supervising Sound Editors Sullivan and DeCristofaro Join Sony Pictures

Supervising sound editors Becky Sullivan and Andrew DeCristofaro, who share a 2015 Academy Award nomination for their work on Unbroken, have joined Sony Pictures Post Production Services. The pair has collaborated on numerous films over the years, including this year’s Best Picture Academy Award winner Green Book, with DeCristofaro as supervising sound editor and Sullivan as automated dialogue replacement supervisor. Sony Pictures is building theater-style studios with sound design and mixing capabilities for the two sound artists on the studio lot.
