UK Films Dominated European Exports in 2019

The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, has just released an updated edition of the report: The Circulation of European Films in non-national markets – Key figures 2019. The study, authored by Patrizia Simone, film analyst in the Observatory’s department for market information, looks at the volume and theatrical performance of European films in non-national markets, that is, theatrical film exports.

Global Box Office Showing Signs of Recovery

All box office regions have reported some notable positive news in recent days as recovery continues to be seen in different pockets around the world, according to the latest research from London firm Gower Street Analytics. However, the report continued, arguably the most important was the re-opening of Los Angeles. Coming just a couple of weeks on from the re-opening of another key Domestic market, New York City, the re-opening of Los Angeles (and a number of other counties) boosted California’s market share of open theatres from 13 percent a week ago to 45 percent this past weekend.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi has launched a series of webinars in partnership with the Israel Film Fund to foster the exchange of cultural content and support filmmakers in the two countries. The webinar series, titled Film Exchange: Abu Dhabi - Israel, will focus on critical areas within production, talent development and filming in both Abu Dhabi and Israel as a way to encourage collaboration and co-productions between Image Nation and the IFF.

The International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy is continuing a coordinated attack on copyright pirates in North America, ensuring that unauthorized services and retailers are held responsible through massive judgments and that their platforms are shut down. Representing more than 140 television channels from Europe, Brazil, the Middle East and South Asia, IBCAP, along with technical services provided by Nagra, is proactively monitoring and identifying unauthorized video services, collecting evidence and assisting with legal actions.

Cinenso Launches Channel for Independent Filmmakers

Cinenso has launched the Cinenso Channel, a secure platform, with multi-digital rights management, and payment infrastructure and storage at a nominal cost for global programmers of independent film content, from short films to niche genre films. It will enable curators – including scholars, rights holders and programmers – to create channels for film screenings, discussions, and archival content.
