PS: Crashing Deadpool

PS Production Services provided lighting, power, dolly and grip equipment for Deadpool, the comic book thriller from 20th Century Fox that opened internationally this month. PS supported the production during two and a half months of shooting on location in Vancouver. The shoot included a spectacular crash sequence staged on the Georgia Viaduct, near the city’s downtown. Deadpool smashed records, garnering $260 million at the box office worldwide for its opening weekend.

Hurlbut Cookes for Fathers and Daughters

Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, ASC used a series of 10 Cooke S4/i focal lengths to shoot Gabriele Muccino's latest feature Fathers and Daughters, starring Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. Hurlbut's lens package for the Canon EOS D500 and MōVI digital 3-axis gyro-stabilized handheld camera gimbal included the Cooke S4/i 14mm, 18mm, 21mm, 27mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 135mm lenses. Fathers and Daughters, a Voltage Films and Busted Shark production of a Voltage Pictures Film, marks the ninth feature film Hurlbut has shot with Cooke lenses.

Creating the Grotesque for Deadpool

Rodeo FX completed close to 230 VFX shots for Deadpool, Tim Miller’s R-rated depiction of the Marvel Comics anti-superhero. The studio, led by VFX supervisor Wayne Brinton, worked on complex sequences that required fire and embers, grotesque skin alterations, and set extensions. Rodeo FX brought its unique skills to this collaborative VFX effort, ensuring that the finished product was much more than the sum of its parts.

LightHouse Films Win Multiple Festival Awards

LightHouse Films director Camille de Galbert’s experimental short film Simon has to date been screened at more than 30 film festivals around the world, winning Best Film and Best Experimental at the Miami International Short Film Festival, Miami, Florida; as well as Best Experimental Film at Malibu International Short Film Festival, Malibu, California, Big Mini Media Film Festival, Brooklyn, New York and Women’s Independent Film Festival, Los Angeles, California. It also earned Best Narrative Short Film at the Blow Up Experimental Film Festival, Chicago, Illinois. In addition, LightHouse client director Charlie Mysak was named Best Emerging Director at the One Screen Film Festival (part of The One Club the world's foremost non-profit organization for the recognition and promotion of excellence in advertising) for his documentary short New Heights, which spotlights the work of the New York-based community organization of the same name and the positive role it played in the lives of three young New Yorkers.

SMPTE Receives Third AMPAS Award

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has received a Special Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. AMPAS presented the Special Award plaque to SMPTE at the Academy's annual Scientific and Technical Awards presentation, which took place Februrary 13 in Beverly Hills, California.

Disney, Lionsgate, and Twentieth Century Fox will release four live-action and animated feature films for Dolby Cinema around the world. The first of the new titles will be Twentieth Century Fox’s Deadpool, in theatres February 12. Additional titles include Disney’s Zootopia, in theatres March 4; Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Allegiant, in theatres March 18; and Lionsgate’s Now You See Me 2, in theatres June 10.

Sim Group Aids Women in Film PSA

A simple walk in a park can prove heartbreaking for sufferers of age-related macular degenerative disease as vividly represented in a public service announcement produced by Women in Film for the Discovery Eye Foundation’s Macular Degeneration Partnership. The Sim Group, through its Sim Digital, Bling Digital and Chainsaw divisions, donated a variety of goods and services toward the production of the PSA, which stresses the importance of early detection in avoiding the worst consequences of a disease that affects some 15 million Americans.
