UNIC Says All Films in Leading Festivals Should Get a Theatrical Release

The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) has called for films selected in competition at leading film festivals to receive a full theatrical release. Following the decision from the Berlinale Film Festival to include the Spanish original film Elisa y Marcela in its 2019 official selection, the association released the following statement:

Digital Cinema Projection Pioneer Jack Kline Steps Down After 40 Years at Christie

Christie has announced that Jack Kline, a pioneer in digital cinema technology and an architect of the innovative virtual print fee that accelerated the adoption of digital projection in movie theaters and created a revolution in global entertainment, is stepping down as chairman, president and CEO of Christie after 40 years with the company, effective April 1. Current chief financial officer Kazuhisa Kamiyama will assume the role as chairman and CEO, while Kline remains at the company as an executive advisor to the CEO until April 1, 2020 to assist in a smooth transition.

Sony Upgrades Venice to Include 4K HFR Shooting

Sony is upgrading the capabilities of its Venice motion picture camera system by introducing high frame rate shooting, advanced remote-control functionalities and Cooke/i3 and Zeiss extended metadata support, as part of its latest firmware update. Both the free upgrade to firmware Version 4.0 and the optional HFR license will be available in June.

Éclair Announces Updated Long-Term Digital Preservation Initiative

Éclair today announced that its Éclair Preservation initiative, which is dedicated to the secure conservation and management of digital and analog media for the film & television sectors, is in accordance with France’s new National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) bylaws. In effect since January 1, the regulation related to feature film production funding requires all recent and upcoming productions applying for financial support from the organization to subscribe to CST-compliant (RT 043) conservation contracts to safeguard the media’s long-term viability.

Bringing The Beast to Life

PowerHouse VFX, the New York-based boutique visual effects studio, rounded out its first year in business by serving as the sole visual effects vendor on M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass. PowerHouse completed approximately 300 shots ranging from Hero CG character animation work, environmental set extensions including buildings and cars, to bringing The Beast to life in many more scenes than they had done previously in Split.
