IBC2019 Opens Call for Technical Papers

The International Broadcasting Convention is now accepting submissions of technical papers for its annual conference, which is being held this September in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Following an increase in female speakers at the conference in 2018, up from 14 percent in 2017 to 37 percent, IBC is encouraging applications from a globally diverse audience.

Jackson WWl Documentary To Be Re-Released

On the heels of its already record-breaking release, and in response to popular demand, a third Fathom Events date has been added for Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-heralded WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson. The film will be screened at more than 1,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada on Monday, January 21, taking advantage of the long Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

Sound Lounge Turns Twenty

Twenty years ago, Sound Lounge was born out of a desire to create something that did not exist in the audio post-production community. Tom Jucarone, Peter Holcomb and Marshall Grupp imagined an artist-owned studio that put a premium on excellence in everything related to sound, but with a laid-back, friendly vibe. It would be a studio packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art gear, a place where they could work at a high level and nurture the next generation of sound talent, but also a “home” where they wouldn’t mind hanging out after the work was finished.

Sony Completes Spider-Verse Sound

Sound production for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animations’ feature film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has received critical acclaim including a Golden Globe nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Animated Feature and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association win for Best Animation, was completed on the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City.

Trainor Tackles Alaska

Braving the challenging weather and Kodiak brown bears of Alaska, cinematographer Tom Trainor served as director of photography on the new Animal Planet documentary series, Into Alaska. Season one of the series, which showcases the wildlife inhabiting Alaska's national refuges and the men and women who protect them, is currently in rotation on the cable channel.

As a producer, he began doing a lot of work in post production, including sound design, sync sound and re-recording for a range of indie projects, short films and TV shows as well as a variety of Bollywood films. New DPA Mic Passes Its First Screen Test

Oscar winner Simon Hayes has become the first production sound mixer to use DPA’s new d:screet Core 6000 Series subminiature microphones on a major feature film. The currently untitled movie, which is due for release in 2019, is a musical comedy directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Notting Hill). Although details of the plot are sketchy, it is set in the 1960s and 1970s and stars Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Ed Sheeran and Himesh Patel.

SoundFi Names Jonathan Gordon to Head Global Operations, Business Development

Former Sony Pictures Entertainment senior executive Jonathan Gordon has joined SoundFi as executive vice president, head of global operations and business development. Gordon will be part of SoundFi’s senior management team and will work closely with founder/CEO Chris Anastas, president – entertainment division Tracy Falco, and COO/CFO Bill Kehoe. He will be responsible for leading global strategy as well as relations with studios, exhibitors, and other vital partners and industry stakeholders, as the company prepares for its next stage of growth.
