Barco to Receive Oscar for its Laser Projection System

Creating the World of The Marvels

For The Marvels, the new superhero adventure from Marvel Studios, Rising Sun Pictures was tasked with creating a vast city on the planet Hala, home to the Kree Empire and its artificial intelligence ruler, the Supreme Intelligence. Artists created both a representation of the futuristic city at the height of its power, and as a devastated ruin. The studio also produced the film’s awe-inspiring opening and closing sequences showing the luminous implosion and miraculous rebirth of Hala’s sun.

Sean Dunckley Joins Goldcrest Post as Senior Colorist

Goldcrest Post has named Sean Dunckley senior colorist. A highly accomplished post-production veteran, Dunckley brings more than 130 credits spanning features, streaming and broadcast. Recent projects include MGM’s critically acclaimed feature Bottoms, the Max Original crime thriller Tokyo Vice and the Apple TV+ teen comedy Dickinson. At Goldcrest, he will focus on high quality studio and independent features, streaming productions, and broadcast series.

Sailing a Computer-Generated World

Rising Sun Pictures delivered more than 170 visual effects shots for the first season of One Piece, the Netflix adventure series about the young pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew on a quest for treasure and glory. The studio’s work centered on the fantastical array of naval and pirate ships featured in the show, a live action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s immensely popular manga.

Animating Miss Minutes

Rising Sun Pictures was a key visual effects provider for season two of Loki, the hugely popular series from Marvel and Disney+. The studio’s primary role was to animate Miss Minutes, an artificial intelligence driven character in the form of an orange clock who appears throughout the series, spreading propaganda on behalf of the Time Variance Authority, the organization that monitors timelines in the multiverse. RSP worked under the supervision of Marvel visual effects supervisors Christopher Townsend and Sandra Balej and visual effects producer Allison Paul.

Celebrated Indie Film Bushman Restored

A new 4K restoration of David Schickele’s Bushman (1971) will make its North American debut this year, marking the first time in decades that this celebrated landmark of American independent cinema will be widely available. Overseen by the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive and The Film Foundation, the restoration will be distributed worldwide in all media by Milestone Films and Kino Lorber. Funding for the restoration was provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, with additional support provided by Peter Conheim, Cinema Preservation Alliance.

David Barber Named President of the Motion Picture Sound Editors

The Motion Picture Sound Editors trade group has elected David Barber, MPSE, to a two-year term as president. Barber succeeds Mark Lanza, MPSE, who reached his term limit. Additionally, Miguel Araujo was re-elected as secretary, while Eric Marks was appointed to fill Barber’s previous post as vice president on an interim basis until the next board election in October. Chris Reeves and Solange Schwalbe continue in their roles as treasurer and sergeant at arms, respectively.
