The Motion Picture Sound Editors association presented the 67th MPSE Annual Golden Reel Awards at a black-tie ceremony Sunday, January 19 at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Golden Reel Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing were presented in 23 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, special venue and other media.

Facing the Challenge of Giant Screen Close-Ups

Cinematographer Peter Chang has completed his latest film, Cuba, which won the Best Documentary award at the 34th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and has begun releasing to museums, educational institutions and other giant screen and IMAX venues. In a break from giant screen tradition, his film features close-ups. To accomplish that, he turned to Cooke lenses.

New Jumanji Raised the Stakes in Sound Production

In Columbia Pictures’ Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang from the 2017 hit, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game. The film, which made its way to North American theatres in December, has collected more than $600 million at the global box office. Also marking a return engagement is the team from Sony Pictures Post Production Services that created the earlier film’s soundtrack.

HPA Tech Retreat 2020 Main Program Lineup Announced

The Hollywood Professional Association has announced additional details for its 2020 HPA Tech Retreat, which will take place February 17-20. The HPA Tech Retreat includes the main conference program, Supersession, TR-X and the Innovation Zone as well as extensive networking and meeting opportunities that are incorporated throughout the four day event. The 2020 HPA Tech Retreat will take place at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, California.

Elite Media Adds Sony 4K HDR Mastering Monitors

Santa Clarita, California post-production facility Elite Media Technologies has added two Sony BVM-HX310 31-inch 4K high dynamic range master monitors to complement several BVM-X300, 30-inch 4K/HDR OLED reference monitors. The new HX310s work in conjunction with the X300s in critical monitoring situations, mastering and quality control environments and advance Elite’s HDR capabilities by offering support for wider color gamuts and providing up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. In addition, the HX310s can be color-matched to the incumbent X300 monitors for accurate color reproduction throughout the facility.
