Defining Digital Cinema Technology

Digital cinema technology is defined by a collection of documents developed by many different organizations. No one organization defines it all, and in one case, the organization no longer exists. To address that situation, industry veteran Michael Karagosian has launched the website Cinepedia. His goal is to provide a single source of information about cinema technology. Among his many accomplishments Karagosian represented the technology interests of the National Association of Theatre Owners for eleven years during the digital cinema transition and is co-chair of the ASC Technology Subcommittee on Next Generation Cinema Display. I recently spoke with him about Cinepedia.

MoCap Makes Maz Kanata Go

In a pivotal moment in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the CGI character Maz Kanata, played by Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, shows up just in time to give the Rebels a vital piece of information. Although Maz’s appearance is brief, the complex shoot involved creating a temporary, studio-grade motion capture stage inside the famed Pinewood Studios. To complete this task, Lucasfilm turned to Audiomotion and its Vicon system.

Animating a Singular Kiss

What began as an indie mobile game in 2014, Five Nights At Freddy’s has grown into a multimedia franchise with multiple games, novel adaptations and a feature film currently in progress. The series is produced by Kiev, Ukraine-based GoldenLane Studio. One particularly challenging scene for GoldenLane co-founder Roman Maltsev was playing two characters named Zoe and Ellis that kiss.

The Los Angeles Section of the Audio Engineering Society and the Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will host a joint meeting this month exploring sound editorial for Amazon’s new sci-fi anthology series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. The meeting is slated for Tuesday, January 30 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.

With the IMF Analyzer 2018, IRT presents the new version of its professional analyzer software for the Interoperable Master Format in the file-based production process. Initiated by the Hollywood film industry and video-on-demand platforms such as Netflix, the IMF standard of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is becoming increasingly important in the exchange of audiovisual content.

Arri Rental Brooklyn Haus is now open in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
