Showcase Cinemas Brings Back Bookworm Wednesdays

Showcase Cinemas is bringing back its popular summer Bookworm Wednesdays program, giving children free admission to a movie when they present a book report at participating locations this July. One of Showcase Cinemas’ longest-standing community programs, Bookworm Wednesdays was developed to encourage young children to read during the summer months.

UNIC Launches People Program

The European Cinema trade grouping UNIC – representing national associations and cinema operators across 39 territories – last week officially launched the UNIC People Program, its five work streams for the year ahead, and its newly formed advisory board.

The Flash Releasing in ScreenX and 4DX

CJ 4DPlex and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the epic DC superhero movie The Flash will debut in both the 270-degree panoramic ScreenX format and the multisensory 4DX experiential format. Distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, The Flash will release in North American theatres on June 16 and internationally beginning June 14.

Volfoni: Creative 3D Technology

Founded in 2007, Volfoni has grown to become one of the major companies in the stereoscopic 3D cinema market. Importantly, Volfoni is one of the only companies in the world to be endorsed by all the major Hollywood studios for the quality of both its active and passive 3D technologies. A French company with a global presence, Volfoni’s principal headquarters are in Paris, its research and development offices are in the south of France, and it has sale’s offices in countries around the world. Volfoni recently created a joint venture in China to more effectively penetrate the Chinese market.

Digital Cinema Pioneer AAM Turns Twenty

On June 17, digital cinema pioneer Arts Alliance Media will celebrate its 20th anniversary. The company was founded in 2003 by Thomas Hoegh and Arts Alliance Ventures, and initiated the first global digital cinema rollout, replacing 35mm projectors with digital upgrades for the UK’s Digital Screen Network. A short time later, AAM became the founding investor of Lovefilm and Picturehouse Cinemas, which were eventually sold to Amazon and Cineworld respectively. In 2007, AAM negotiated financing agreements with the Hollywood studios and that same year launched its first theatre management system. In 2008 AAM completed the first virtual print fee deal in Europe with the French cinema chain CGR.

International Box Office Surges in May

In May, and for the first time since January 2020, the international market (excluding China) reached the same box office level as the comparable month in 2017-2019 on average, according to a report released by the London-based analytics firm Gower Street. The international box office (excluding China), reached $1.54 billion in May, just shy of the pre-pandemic average at today’s exchange rates. Globally the third part of Guardians of the Galaxy achieved the highest box office in May with around $750 million.
