The American Society of Cinematography’s Cinema Display Evaluation Plan & Test Protocol is a key step towards establishing goals for an enhanced cinema experience. It was developed by the ASC’s Next Generation Cinema Display technology subcommittee in response to the emergence of new cinema technologies, and the resulting need for guidance among exhibitors, distributors, and technology providers. As co-chairs of the NGCD committee, we would like to take this opportunity to provide some background and the anticipated direction for this work.
The Technology Committee of the American Society of Cinematographers has published its Cinema Display Evaluation Plan and Test Protocol, which defines a method for the visual evaluation of parameters that characterize next generation cinema projection and active screens. As part of the industry’s move to high dynamic range and wide color gamut, the document represents the first step towards the goal of identifying where value is created from the filmmaker’s point-of-view. Dolby Vision titles now available for purchase and rental on Vudu include the all-new release The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and fan favorites Lucy, Oblivion, and Lone Survivor.
