Support for independent storytelling has always been the driving force of Sundance Institute. This year the Institute is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sundance Film Festival by collecting anecdotes and memories from the people who know the most about what the Festival means. Only those who have been to the Sundance Film Festival can truly convey the true spirit of Sundance which is why the Institute is asking those who have been there to share their Sundance stories.

Q-tec Completes First Installation of RealD’s 3D System in Japan

Q-tec Inc. one of Japan's leading video post-production service providers announced that it has completed the first domestic installation of 3D cinema system developed by digital 3D delivery company RealD. Q-tec plans to begin the full-scale operation this month. The number of digital 3D cinema screens in Japan was around 30 at the end of 2007 but there are currently more than 50 screens available as the United States film Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D was released in October. The number is projected to rise with the expectation of 3D films produced and released in Japan.

Zacuto Announces Four New Camera Mounts

Chicago-based production equipment maker Zacuto has announced four new mounts including the Zephyr Zacuto's 15mm lightweight support plate; the ZRed an EVF Red One Mount; the Zandy a19mm to 15mm rod mount; and the Zgrip Zandy an articulating handgrip. Zephyr Replacing the Sony and Panasonic ENG style cameras’ V-Wedge plate the Zephyr allows a quick-release from the tripod plate.

I missed this year’s ShowEast. I tore ligaments in my left foot in a volleyball game a few nights before the show began and was in no shape to navigate airports and trade show floors. However after going through a raft of press releases and talking to many people who were there I think it’s fair to say that I was not the only one who was feeling a measure of pain that week.

SMPTE to Standardize Formats for Broadband-Distributed Content

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is forming a technology committee to standardize mastering and packaging formats for content distributed over broadband networks. Such a broadband standard could fuel fresh business models by enabling consumers to purchase entertainment from any online destination and play it back on any device. The committee’s launch highlights SMPTE’s interest in addressing the challenges of delivering professional content—including movies television programming online programming and music—no matter the distribution platform.

QuVIS Selects Paragon Software for Wraptor

QuVIS has selected Paragon Software’s Universal File System Driver technology to embed within their new Wraptor Digital Cinema Package mastering plug-in for Apple Final Cut Studio. Paragon's technology fulfills the requirements for creating a digital cinema content distribution hard drive according to the Digital Cinema Initiative specifications by enabling a Mac with Wraptor and Final Cut Studio to: Create a Linux ext2/3 File System partition on a USB2.0 external hard drive suitable for use as a DCI-compliant distribution hard drive.

Universal Pictures International to Support Ymagis Digital Cinema Roll Out in Europe

Ymagis the Paris-based European digital cinema services provider has announced that Universal Pictures will provide movies to theaters equipped by Ymagis and will pay digital print fees under a long-term agreement similar to those signed by Paramount Disney and Fox. Ymagis started its roll out activity in July after the first signing contracts with distributors and has so far signed contracts with exhibitors for a total of 29 screens in France.
