The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will bridge the worlds of Silicon Valley and Hollywood with its Entertainment Technology in the Connected Age conference, May 8-9 at the Microsoft Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View, California. During this year's conference, titled "Redefining the Entertainment Experience," experts and executives from leaders across the technology, telecommunications, streaming, broadcast, and cinema sectors will come together to explore emerging technologies' impact on the current and future delivery of compelling connected entertainment experiences.

AFI to Honor Cinematographer Frederick Elmes

The American Film Institute announced today that celebrated cinematographer Frederick Elmes (AFI Class of 1972) will receive the 2017 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal. This honor recognizes the extraordinary creative talents of an AFI alumnus or alumna who embodies the qualities of filmmaker Franklin J. Schaffner: talent, taste, dedication and commitment to quality storytelling in film and television.

Dolby’s Escape Premieres at Tribeca

Dolby’s short animated film Escape, a sequel to two-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning short Silent, premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Chosen for the Tribeca short film category out of a record number of 4,38 submissions, Escape is the story of a lone space explorer who crash-lands on a desolate planet and must find a way to make her new home habitable.

Two Looks for 13 Reasons Why

One of the most honest portraits of teenage life, 13 Reasons Why is a Netflix series based on the 2007 young adult novel by Jay Asher and adapted by Brian Yorkey. Academy Award winning writer/director Tom McCarthy worked with cinematographer Andrij Parekh (Show Me a Hero, Blue Valentine) with Panasonic VariCam 35 cinema cameras to capture a distinctive look for the first two episodes of the series.

HPA Accepting Entries for Engineering Excellence Award

The Hollywood Professional Association has opened the call for entries for its Engineering Excellence Award. Submissions for the engineering awards will be accepted from April 23 to May 26. Now in its 12th year, the HPA Engineering Excellence Award is considered one of the most important technology honors in the industry, spotlighting companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop breakthrough technologies.

Axle Video Releases Axle AI

Axle Video has released axle ai, which it calls “a breakthrough media analysis and search platform.” Post-production teams can use axle ai to save a tremendous amount of time that would otherwise be spent manually tagging their media, and can benefit from the ability to find media that may not have been managed at all, often simply with cryptic multi-digit filenames from camera media.

FuseFX Launches VR Spinoff

FuseFX, which produces visual effects for such shows as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., American Horror Story, Luke Cage and Criminal Minds, has launched a spinoff venture to tackle projects in the rapidly expanding field of virtual reality. FuseVR will create visual effects assets for virtual reality projects, including 3D sets, digital environments and CG characters. The effort will be led by Bud Myrick as VR supervisor and John Heller as VR creative director.
