Rodeo FX won three Visual Effects Society Awards for its work on Game of Thrones at the 15th VES Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The awards honored the studio’s work on Battle of the Bastards, the ninth and most memorable episode of season six.
Harkness Screens has announced that senior vice president sales & marketing (Asia) Preetham Daniel has taken on new responsibilities in addition to his existing role. As well as managing Harkness’ expansion in Asia, which has seen significant growth, Daniel will focus on supporting Harkness’ global customers and partners. In addition, Chaitanya Patel is joining the Harkness commercial team in Bangalore.
The American Film Institute released a statement today regarding award-winning Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who will not attend this year’s Academy Award ceremonies because of President Donald Trump’s executive order banning Iranians from entering the country. Farhadi, who received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for A Separation, is nominated again in the same category this year.
Hussein Hassan, the director of the award-winning Iraqi film Reseba – The Dark Wind, has withdrawn his visa application to the United States Consulate for clearance to attend the North American premiere of his film at the 34th edition of Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival. Festival director Jaie Laplante said the Festival will proceed with the screening of Reseba – The Dark Wind as scheduled, but with a deep sense of loss and disappointment.
The Optical Devices Division of FujiFilm has appointed Tom Fletcher as director of sales. In his new role, Fletcher will oversee sales and promotion of broadcast and cinema lenses in North America. Working under the guidance of division vice president Gordon Tubbs, Fletcher will lead the sales efforts of six regional managers in North America. Fletcher’s position is effective immediately.
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced final approval of its nomination of Andy Maltz as 2018-2020 chair of ISO/TC 36, the International Organization for Standardization group dedicated to cinematography. Maltz, who is managing director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Science and Technology Council, will serve as chair-elect in 2017 as SMPTE member Julian Pinn, the current chair, serves out his term after nine years in the ro
Wim Buyens, senior vice president and general manager of Barco’s Entertainment division, has been appointed as chairman of the executive committee and board of governors of the Advanced Imaging Society. Buyens joined the society in 2014 and has been serving as vice-chairman since 2015.
Rooftop Films has awarded sixteen cash and service grants to alumni filmmakers, including The Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund Garbo NYC Feature Film Grants, which were awarded to directors Robert Greene and Kirsten Johnson. Greene will receive a monetary grant of $15,000 to help finish his new film, Bisbee ‘17, and Johnson will receive a $10,000 grant to support her film, Deadpan.
Karol Martesko-Fenster and Evan Saxon have joined the executive team of Abramorama as executive vice president and COO, and West Coast head of acquisitions and business development respectively. Company founder Richard Abramowitz made the announcement.
Versatile colorist Dan Hermelin has joined Roundabout Entertainment as the facility continues to build its talent pool and broaden its services for picture finishing and restoration. Hermelin arrives with more than 20 years of post-production experience and a resume spanning features, television and restoration project, the latter including re-masters of Jerry Maguire, Men in Black and The Deep. At Roundabout, he will continue to service a diverse clientele, including his current project, the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Nickelodeon.
