The 50th anniversary of the launch of Star Trek is this September. Fifty years after William Shatner made his first captain’s log, the power of Star Trek is felt across generations. Just this summer, the thirteenth Star Trek movie was released and has grossed more than 231 million dollars to date. It’s pretty clear: Star Trek is here to stay.

Cleveland Gets First Giant Dome Cinema Laser System

The newly branded Cleveland Clinic Dome Theater at Great Lakes Science Center is about to receive a serious projection upgrade – the world’s first giant dome cinema laser system. The theater re-launch, complete with new seats and carpet, is set to open to the public in October. D3D Cinema, in partnership with Christie, is handling the installation.

Considering Chinese Exhibition

The motion picture business in China is one of, if not, the fastest growing in the world. By one estimate, there were some 31,000 screens in China by the end of 2015 and that number is expected to exceed 40,000 by the end of this year. Not surprisingly, a number of digital cinema technology companies have announced major Chinese sales in the past few months. Perhaps no company has enjoyed more success in China to date than Dolby. I recently spoke with Doug Darrow, senior vice president, cinema, Dolby Laboratories, about their success and the Chinese market in general.

ARPA Presents U.S. Premiere of 3 Weeks in Yerevan

3 Weeks in Yerevan, a new comedy by the Award-winning collaboration of writer-director Vahe Berberian and producer-co-director Vahik Pirhamzei, will have its North American premiere September 14 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Sponsored by the Analysis Research Planning for Armenia Foundation, the premiere will feature a post-screening Q&A with the film's three leading men Berberian, Pirhamzei (who also star in the film), and actor-comedian Hrant Tokhatyan.

SMPTE Elevates 16 to Fellow Status
