Luma Pictures Breathes Life into Thor’s Stone Man

The challenge of bringing Marvel's Thor: The Dark World to life involved many creative people working simultaneously in The United States and Australia. Many of the film’s signature creatures were realized by the teams at Luma Pictures in offices in Santa Monica, California and Melbourne, Australia. One particular highlight for this movie was the Stone Man.

Designed to streamline animation and visual effects production pipelines, XMesh is a set of tools for saving animated scene geometry in a condensed format that yields smaller files for faster loading, manipulation and sharing across facilities and applications. Also compatible with Autodesk 3ds Max, the robust and scalable multi-threaded solution allows artists to quickly open, share or receive computer generated assets from internal studio departments or external facilities.

Side by Side Documentary to be Archived on Kodak Film

Producers Keanu Reeves and Justin Szlasa have chosen to create a film element of their feature documentary Side by Side on Kodak Vision 3 Color Digital Intermediate Film 2254. This intermediate post-production step will also provide the producers with a master for making 35mm film prints. The 2254 will then be archived at the Academy Film Archive, which is providing substantial and instrumental support to preserve this culturally significant exploration into the evolution of digital and film formats.

Harold Lloyd’s Onetime Bungalow Available for Lease at Hollywood Center Studios

Tucked away in a corner of the lot at historic Hollywood Center Studios sits a 1,200 square foot, wood-frame structure known as Bungalow A. The building has everything a film or television production company might want in an office structure: a suite of executive offices, a large common room, a kitchen, private courtyards and decks, ample parking, high-speed internet and round-the-clock security. Bungalow A also comes with something few other office rentals in the area can match: a lofty spot in Hollywood history. During the 1920s, Bungalow A served as the home base for actor Harold Lloyd, arguably the biggest star of the era.

Aframe Cloud Platform Speeds In the Flesh Workflow

Aframe’s cloud video production platform helped Timeline TV in Media City to expedite production for the second series of BBC Three’s zombie drama In the Flesh, the company announced. By streamlining the Avid-centric workflow and eliminating a time-consuming transcoding step, Aframe helped Timeline TV make rushes ready for the edit, and make viewing copies available to clients and executives in less than five hours, instead of the usual 35 hours.
