Stereo D Creating Star Wars in 3D

Beginning with this week's Star Wars: The Force Awakens directed by J.J. Abrams, Deluxe's Stereo D, has been commissioned by Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Studios to create the stereoscopic editions for three upcoming releases in the iconic Star Wars franchise. The other two titles are Rogue One directed by Gareth Edwards and releasing on December 16, 2016, and Star Wars: Episode VIII, directed by Rian Johnson and releasing on May 26, 2017.

Capturing In the Heart of the Sea

Anthony Dod Mantle, ASC, BSC, DFF, director Ron Howard's cinematographer on the 1970s Formula 1 adrenaline film Rush, was charged with creating the arresting visuals for In the Heart of the Sea. The logistics of the film, much of which involved the liberal use of water, were daunting. “Shooting a film outside, in English weather, and trying to break the film down into blocks where I could maintain continuity between exterior tanks, interior tanks and real locations – that was quite a big deal,” Dod Mantle says still with a sense of awe.

Pixvana Raises $6 Million to Bring VR Video Cloud Production, Delivery Platform to Market

Pixvana, a virtual reality technology startup, has launched today with a $6 million investment led by Madrona Venture Group with participation from Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital, and angel investors. Pixvana is developing a cloud-based technology platform that dramatically improves the immersive video viewing experience for VR and augmented reality applications across a broad set of viewing devices. The company plans to bring it to market in 2016.

Why We Film Gets Kickstarter Boost

Why We Film, a documentary backed by the Association of Moving Image Archivist’s Film Advocacy Task Force, is an exploration of why and how film is engaged as a physical object and experience – the compelling reasons audiences watch it, filmmakers create with it, schools teach with it, and the key factors pointing to the need for its preservation. Today, its Kickstarter campaign was chosen as a Featured Project on the Film & Video category page of the funding platform’s site. It was also recently chosen as a Staff Pick.

Spectrum, Mistika and Deadline Gallipoli

Established Australian post house Spectrum Films has played host to international productions such as The Railway Man, The Water Diviner, The Matrix, The Great Gatsby, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, Sacred Heart and many other titles, including, most recently, a compelling documentary that aired in 2015 called Deadline Gallipoli: The Full Story. The documentary illustrates how Spectrum Films relied fully on SGO Mistika's open architecture, speed and versatility. The entire project was post-produced in Mistika including the online, color grading, titling and deliverables.
