CinemaNext and Lebanese cinema chain Empire Cinemas today announced an agreement for the deployment of CinemaNext’s Sphera premium cinema concept at the Al Andalus Mall in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Located on the Red Sea coast, Empire Cinemas’ new 18-screen, 1,176-seat complex featuring Sphera as its centrepiece is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Innovation Arts & Entertainment, the Chicago based company that founded and operates the annual Beach Road Weekend music festival on Martha’s Vineyard, has been awarded a contract to build and operate a new outdoor entertainment center on Cape Cod.
The Directors Guild of America recently completed a total renovation of its flagship motion picture exhibition space at the prestigious DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. Guided by a guild committee of six leading filmmakers, the renewal project has moved the 600-seat theatre to the forefront of cinema technology with the installation of custom-built Dolby Vision laser projection and a Dolby Atmos immersive sound system encompassing more than 70 Meyer Sound cinema loudspeakers.
Marcus Theatres has added a drive-in movie theatre to its Twin Creek Cinema in Bellevue, Nebraska. Strong Technical Services worked with Marcus to develop the concept. Additional locations are under consideration.
Movie Tavern by Marcus is a premium theatre concept offering restaurant-style dining and in-seat service for moviegoers. At its new location in the Brookfield Square shopping center in suburban Milwaukee, guests can enjoy dinner and a movie in the premium SuperScreen DLX theatre. It is the first full theatre complex in the U.S. to exclusively feature JBL Sculpted Surround and Dolby Atmos.
ABR Cinemas is a multiplex located in historic Gudivada, India and is one of Andhra Pradesh’s premier cinemas. To create a more immersive experience with even, balanced sound coverage, the exhibitor recently decided to upgrade its aging audio systems. The company hired sound integrators Digital Sound System to install three Harman Professional Solutions cinema audio systems featuring JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers and state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos processors.

Mark Louis is Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas director of presentation. In that role, he is responsible for maintaining the level of technology that has become central to the exhibitor’s brand and identity. Louis is currently overseeing the opening of seven new Alamo theatres across the United States, while simultaneously maintaining the quality control of the established sites. When I contacted him to talk about how he approaches new builds he described himself as “busier that a one-armed reel-to-reel projectionist,” but he agreed to talk via email. The MCX Multicines Xtreme theatre has just opened in the Condado de Quito shopping mall and is Ecuador’s first cinema equipped with 4K RGB laser projection. Integrator Cinema Equipment & Supplies handled the installation of a Christie CP4330-RGB projector with RealLaser illumination.
