Pushing the Boundaries

Event cinema has come a long way since its earliest days more than a decade ago. The challenge now is to push the boundaries of event cinema to find new content, new concepts that can attract and sustain even larger audiences. To that end, the Event Cinema Association’s annual day-long ECA Conference & Awards session will be held in London this Friday February 3 at the QE11 Centre in central London, near Parliament Square in Westminster. The conference, now in its fourth year is the only event of its kind in the world. To learn more about the association, the conference and the event cinema business in general I spoke with Melissa Cogavin, the ECA’s managing director.

MPSE Announces 2017 Golden Reel Nominees

The Motion Picture Sound Editors today announced nominees for the 64th MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Nominees represent the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment productions. The 2017 MPSE Filmmaker Award winner is Guillermo del Toro. This year’s MPSE Career Achievement Award goes to Harry Cohen.

Matz to Chair SMPTE Cinematography Standards Group

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced final approval of its nomination of Andy Maltz as 2018-2020 chair of ISO/TC 36, the International Organization for Standardization group dedicated to cinematography. MPSE to Honor Guillermo del Toro

The Motion Picture Sound Editors will honor Guillermo del Toro with its annual Filmmaker Award. The acclaimed director of such films as Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015) and the forthcoming The Shape of Water is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to the art of cinema. He will receive the award at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony February 19 in Los Angeles.

Kirschner Awarded NYWIFT Grant for Mallwalkers

New York Women in Film & Television has awarded its $7,500 Ravenal Foundation Grant to Debra Kirschner for Mallwalkers. Kirschner also wrote the script. The film follows a retired music teacher – a recent widow and a lifelong goody-goody – who is coaxed by her daughter to take daily walks in the local mall. There she connects with a wild posse of seniors who suspect foul play at the mall, and she becomes determined to put a stop to it.

SMPTE Announces Commemorative Books Celebrating Centennial

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced publication of The Honor Roll and Honorary Members of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, a limited-edition book showcasing the industry leaders and innovators who have contributed their talents to SMPTE over the past 10 decades. The Society is also accepting preorders for Magic & Miracles: 100 Years of Moving Image Science & Technology, a richly illustrated and meticulously crafted history of the Society and its groundbreaking work over the past century. Both books celebrate the Society's Centennial.
